Hm, something that lives in the water but is not amphibious, a mammal, or a fish. Something more general than an individual species, jellyfish is close.

Plankton?
Anemone?
Cephalopod?

I have a word
Is it a noun? If so, which of a person, a place, or a thing would it be most classified as?

Is it normally used by a person?

If yes, is it normally used for work (e.g. by one or more occupations), or is it used for entertainment?

In a broad sense of 'used':

It's sometimes used by a person.

Work and leisure are both possible applications.

Is it a particular thing... Like "the curling championship trophy on my mantel?" Or a general thing... Like, "an onion?"

Is it more likely to be used in blue-collar or white-collar work during working hours? Or is it roughly equal?

Again, taking a pretty broad interpretation of 'used' - white collar

Let me rephrase that to "Is it generally bigger or smaller than a foot in the longer of width and length?" to avoid any confusing question of orientation.

I'll also separately ask, is it taller than a foot in height or shorter?
