All guesses are wrong, Octavious was the furthest off. The process is usually applied to metal, but sometimes wood or plastic. As well as via pressure, the process can be done through cutting bits off, although it is less common.

These are still all wrong. The process creates a regular pattern when it is applied. The thing itself is a regular pattern.

The correct answer is knurling, a regular pattern of crossing ridges usually applied to metal via pressure.
