MAFIA 63: THE SCOURGE [HIDDEN]

#1 Post by Tom Bombadil » Wed Dec 30, 2020 4:07 pm

INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game (for the town majority) is to kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

GENERAL RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.
1. All players must vote at least once per game day, and post at least twice per game day.
2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.
3. All players are forbidden from using encryption.
4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing, or copied mechanics.
5. All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all comment threads related to the game notes.
6. All players are forbidden from cheating.
7. All players are required to play to win.
8. Players and/or teams may not concede the game in public.
9. All players must not +1 other players' posts.

ELABORATION

0. Given a lack of omniscience, the GM cannot create a rule to resolve all possible scenarios pre-emptively. To compensate for this, the GM is permitted to resolve a given scenario however they see fit, within the remit of the rules listed above, in the interest of all participants. The GM will resolve all scenarios as closely as possible to the intention of the rules, and will present an explanation regarding the adjudication to the greatest possible detail (which does not compromise anything in-game) and as closely in accordance with the written rules as possible.

1. You MUST cast a vote at least once during each day phase. You may vote and then 'unvote' (see below) if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an 'unvote' in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Kill” is permitted. During each day phase, every player MUST make at least two game-related posts. The GMs will use reasonable discretion when applying this rule.

2. All role PMs have been posted in the setup information. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; after all, the fun of this game is reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels that an average person would require outside software or other tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "I AM THE COP" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average user could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. Only GM endorsed QuickTopic threads can be used for communicating with one another outside of the main game thread; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging between players. You may PM the GM with questions or instructions.

5. Players who have been removed from the game are no longer playing the game, and will not be permitted to comment on it in private messages or comment threads. A special QuickTopic "God Thread" will be opened for individuals who wish to spectate on the game, or players who have been eliminated. Use this channel to discuss the game while it is still ongoing.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you are considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, message the GM about it before saying/doing it and the GM will let you know whether it is allowed or not.

To clarify further: Players may not copy and paste any game related Mechanics. Players may not doctor, and create fake game related mechanics. Players may not share personal correspondence between GM to player under any circumstances. The GM will not confirm any claims, or adjudicate based upon anything that could easily be sorted out through questioning and evidentiary circumstance.

7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; the GM will exercise caution and restraint in observing this rule. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

8. If someone wishes to concede defeat, they must PM the GM, or post in their relevant QT thread for the GM to check it over. Public concessions are not permitted.

9. You are not permitted to click the "+1" on any other player's in-game posts. Giving +1s to the GM, by contrast, is actively encouraged.

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM’s discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. Sanctions such as future bans will be determined by the consensus of the active player base after the game has concluded. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

ROLE ACTIONS
If you are a Power Role or otherwise have any actions to take, please PM your action the GM. Night actions will be processed at the end of the night and can be changed up to that point. Mafia's night kill will be voted on in the mafia QuickTopic thread.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not mod-killed by rule in this game. The in-game voting mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the “VOTING” section below for more information. Suffice to say that spamming is not worth anyone’s time in this setup, and will be frowned upon, so while you may not be lynched or mod-killed for spamming, please refrain from doing so.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the site moderators/admins, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence. The silenced player will then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. Replacement is not guaranteed.

TURN DURATION
This game’s Day phases will last 48 hours and Night phases will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g., hammer). Extensions may be granted at the GM’s discretion, but don’t count on it. Phase shifts will be at 8pm EST.

VOTING

There are three types of voting within this game: collective voting to execute perceived Mafia in Day phases, collective voting to end a Day or Night phase, and Mafia voting to kill town members in Night phases.

“Day Kill” vote: The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of hash symbols before your intended vote target. (e.g., ##VOTE VECNA) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. In the event of a tie during an execution vote, no one shall be killed.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double hashtags your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts.

Must Vote: At the end of the Day phase, all participating players must have their vote on a candidate. You may ##VOTE and then ##UNVOTE if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an ##UNVOTE in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Kill” is permitted.

Hammer Vote: The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to activate the hammer mechanic. Notate this vote with a pair of hashes before the word end. (EX: ##END). The day will end as soon as a majority of players are voting to endhammer the same player. If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day. Night phases may not normally be hammered - any exception to this will be announced by the GM.

Mafia Vote: The third level of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their NK (nightkill) target during Night phases. The mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss this. Please make your votes in bold, like so: kill Zultar (< b > kill Zultar < / b >). Mafia NK will be decided by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the oldest vote will break the tie. The oldest vote determines which member of the Mafia team actually performs the kill.

PROLOGUE

YEAR 3089 – BYNTI SYSTEM– Aboard the Imperial ship Rhapsody

The sound of shrill sirens, deafening in their loudness, awoke Cameron Bates from his sleep. A slow red strobe flickered from the light above the doorway. Moving quickly, he threw on his uniform. His wife stirred next to him, sitting up in the bed.

“What is going on?” asked Amanda, “Is this a test?”

“No. I don’t know what is going on. Get dressed, and get Jessica dressed as well. Once I find out, I’ll come right back and let you know.”

He could see the fear in Amanda’s eyes, but she did not verbalize what she was thinking. She only nodded and moved to the conjoining room where their six-year-old daughter slept. Cameron took one last glance in her direction, then turned and rushed into the hallway alit with red flashing light.

Several people rushed into various directions in the labyrinth of hallways on the ship. It was commotion, sure, but not chaos. The soldiers on the ship all had posts to get to, and very few on board were novices when it came to battle. Cameron took his final right hand turn and walked through the doorway to the bridge of the ship. Most everyone was already in position, and they saluted as he entered.

“Status update” Cameron bellowed, louder than he intended.

“Unidentified ships heading towards us Lieutenant. Several small crafts – they are not responding to communications” replied Sergeant Abramovich who manned the radar.

In the background he could hear the communication team continuing to broadcast messages, asking the ships to identify themselves. Cameron took a closer look at the radar and spotted 6 blips headed their direction. Each looked roughly the size of a small destroyer. Larger than a single manned fighter, but likely with crews smaller than a dozen.

“Scramble a quarter of our fighters and have them approach the vessels” a voice said from Cameron’s left.

Captain Wills sat in his chair; eyes glued to the radar screen projected in front of him. He beckoned for Cameron to come closer. He did this often, and Cameron was proud of that as it showed how much trust he placed in him. Captain Wills was a good man who commanded respect – and the crew would follow his orders unconditionally. Wills knew this, so he took care to make sure his orders were wise before issuing them.

“What do you think of this?” asked Captain Wills.

“I don’t know sir.” Cameron replied. “6 destroyers versus our flagship. Seems like suicide if they are pirates. Surely they wouldn’t be so brazen and could find easier prey. Maybe they are from a nearby planet and are desperate for aid?”

That seemed the most plausible to Cameron. It was not unheard of for human settlements to ask for assistance when they saw a Imperial flagship in their system. Most settlements were small in this system, though intel they received showed none in this immediate area. Still, that made more sense than 6 bandit ships flying head on into a flagship which housed 14 destroyers of its own, along with 40 fighters and the actual defense cannons of the flagship itself.

“I don’t know either” Wills replied. Then louder he said “Send the fighters to intercept, but do not attack unless threatened. Try light signal communication when in range.”

“Yes sir” several men replied in unison.

Wills continued, “Send Bravo team to the deck and prepare a destroyer. Hold off on any…” Wills voiced stopped suddenly.

Cameron turned Wills, but even before his eyes reached the Captain, he knew why the deck was silence. Through the front of the ship, Cameron saw the largest spacecraft he had ever seen. It had just warped into the system - the only explanation. It resembled an Imperial Dreadnought, the largest Imperial ship in existence – only this was maybe 40% larger – the entire black hull so large it was difficult to view all at once.

“Dear Lord” whispered Captain Wills.

A pulse emitted from the strange ship and a wave slammed in the hull of the Rhapsody. She moved slightly in response, but no damage was done.

“Warp out of here!” cried Wills. “Now!”

“Yes sir”

The crew found their seats, and a message blared over the intercom system, warning their people of the imminent light speed jump.
Sergeant Abramovich pressed several buttons, and then slammed the hyperdrive lever….but nothing happened.

“Status?” Cameron shouted.

“Hyperdrive is down.” Sergeant Abramovich replied. “All drives are down.”

In front of them, flashes of light blinded the cabin. Ahead giant projectiles flew towards the flagship Rhapsody.

“Shields up!” cried Wills. “Brace for impact!”

Explosions rattled the ship – the shield stopping the projectiles several meters from the ship – but the sheer force of the explosions tipped the ship and several crew members stumbled to the ground.

“Status?” said Cameron.

“Shields 60 percent”

“Scramble all units. Attack those cannons!” bellowed Wills. Then softer, “Cameron – I will defend this ship to my death. You need to get everyone off this ship. Planet XVI is life sustaining according to our reports. Get them there.”

Cameron locked eyes with his Captain and saw determination. Determination that masked panic, but determination nonetheless. He moved toward the intercom system and began giving instructions that he had always feared.

“Members of the Rhapsody. We are under attack by an unknown entity. Hyperdrives are down. All soldiers report to your posts. All women and children are to report to your designated escape pods immediately. Do not wait. The pods have all essentials. Pods will launch in 5 minutes. Thank you and God Speed. Lieutenant Bates”

Cameron raced down the hallway, and this time there was chaos – not controlled commotion. They had been attacked many times and had defended successfully. They had experience in that, training in that. This was new. Sure, they had trained for this day, but none had expected it. The Rhapsody was one of the most capable ships ever built, and certainly had never had to use the escape pods. People sobbed as they fled to their escape pods. Children carried by their mothers, oblivious to the circumstances yet latching onto the emotions of their parents and crying out in fear. Cameron checked his watch. 90 seconds left.

He reached the escape pod bay and people billowed into their respective pods. This was at least going as smoothly as he had hoped. It looked like the several hundred women and children had made it all in time. He hoped there were no stragglers, but he just did not have the time to check every room. He blocked that fear out of his mind. His mind searched the bay until he found them. His wife Amanda, and his daughter Jessica.

They raced to him and collided with him in an embrace. He savored it for a few seconds, but then pulled away. There was no time. He locked eyes with Amanda, tears streaming down both of their faces.

“I love you so much” Cameron said.

“I love you too.” She replied, choking back tears.

“Everything you need is in the pod. This planet is inhabitable. They will need your strength. Both of your strength.” He said, looking down at Jessica as he spoke.

“I don’t want to go” said Jessica.

“You must” said Cameron, his eyes moist with tears.

“We will come back and get you once this is over.” Cameron said.

He and Amanda both knew that was a lie but neither said anything.

He escorted them into the pod along with the last few holdouts. Once they were all in, he pushed the button on the nearby control panel. The pods began to seal, and Cameron saw Amanda lift Jessica into her arms, their faces barely visible through the small porthole window. He reluctantly turned and raced back towards to bridge. He heard the escape pods detach from the ship and begin to head towards their destination.

He reached an intercom at the door and slammed to button to speak.

“Escape pods detached successfully.” He shouted. “Status report?”

“Shields down to 10 percent” Captain Wills replied. “Fighters on route, ETA ninety seconds. They aren’t going to make it in time Cam.”

Captain Wills had never called him Cam before.

“It’s been an honor, sir” he replied.

There was a flash of light, then immense heat, and finally…nothing but blackness.

Our story will begin 15 years later and follow Jessica and the others try to survive on this new planet.

CHAPTER 1

15 YEARS LATER

Jess walked into the amphitheater behind the rest of her classmates. After a short few weeks, today was graduation. But more importantly, today was when they learned what unit they were assigned to. Today she would become either a runner, a solider, or a gunner. Over the last few weeks, the women of her class had been trained in all three areas, to see where their individual talents would be best used. They could not choose – they relied on leadership to pick what was best for the settlement. Their numbers were so low that every loss of life mattered, and anything they could do to minimize that chance they would take.

In the fifteen years since their evacuation of the Rhapsody, they had erected a small settlement on the planets surface. The planet was inhabitable, but harsh. Temperatures often dropped twenty degrees below zero, and the winds almost never let up. Luckily, the structures of the settlement were well crafted and kept the cold at bay. The largest of the buildings housed the farms, where they were able to grow food. Water was plentiful on the snow-ridden landscape.

Jess reached her seat and looked up towards the head of the room. There sat three women – the settlement Council – which made all decisions for the group. First was Samantha Wills, widow of Captain Wills, who was Head of Engineering. Second was Hillary Ross, Head of Agriculture. Finally, there was Amanda Bates, Jessica’s mother, Head of Military. She would be the one running the ceremony and assigning the new recruits to their posts.

“Congratulations are in order for everyone in this room for completing your training. You are now ready to join our ranks and defend this great settlement from the Scourge that threatens us. You are all the backbone of this settlement. Without our efforts to collect this planets resources, our crops and people would freeze. The men on our farms, and in our houses, and all the scientists working to build a ship do important work – but they are only able to do that because they are protected both from the Scourge and from the elements. Never forget this.”

Jessica locked eyes with her mother as she spoke. She did not remember much of what her mom was like before they evacuated the Rhapsody, but what she saw now was a woman hardened by the circumstances. A woman who had risen to the challenge. The soldiers in this room would die for her – many soldiers already had.

“First I will read those who are added to the infantry,” Amanda continued. “Private Sarah Williamson, Private Lindsay Graff, Private Kelsey Sash, Private Emily Stowe, Private Kaitlyn Cooper, Private Natalie Reese, and Private Ashley Guyut.”

The infantry was the front-line fighters when a geyser erupted. They charged along with the runners to the eruption to trap the gas and bring it back to the settlement. That was essential as it was the fuel that kept the buildings heated and allowed the crops to grow. The soldiers in the infantry used shields and spears to engage with the Scourge that attacked during these runs.

“Next up our new Runners. Private Angelika Smithson, Private Annika Belk, Private Isabelle Hartmann, Private Beth Summers, Private Margaret Berry, Private Candance Cull, Private Meghan Bailey and Private Madison Calin.”

The Runners were paired with the Infantry on the front line. Runners however had no weapons, nor any shields. They relied on speed, evasion, and the infantry to protect them. Runners had one job – to get to the geyser with the collection cannister. The cannister would collect the gas being released into the air, and then would compress it. Runners filled as many cannisters as they were able during the eruptions. It was an honorable position, but not an enviable one.

“Finally, our newest gunners. Private Samantha Peters and Private Jessica Bates.”

Jessica smiled, though she was not surprised. She had excelled at marksmanship in the training. There were much fewer gunners than the others as they had a finite number of rifles and no ability to manufacture more. Two new inductees into the Gunners meant that two had perished since the last class and their weapons were available. Luckily the Scourge beasts had not shown any interest in taking the weapons of the fallen. The role of the Gunners was to set up along the perimeter and bring down the Scourge as they attacked. In particular, the Gunners were tasked to protect the defenseless Runners as they filled the cannisters.

“Be proud of what you have accomplished,” said Amanda. “But be prepared for what is to come.”

“Tonight however, we celebrate!”

VOTING

There are two types of voting within this game: collective voting to execute perceived Mafia in Day phases, and Mafia faction actions.

Daykill vote: The first type of voting is for all players during the day, in which you vote for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of hash symbols before your intended vote target (e.g., ##VOTE bo_sox48).
You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. However, if there is a player that the bot does not quite understand without being spelled out in full, it would be helpful for everyone if you could spell their name out in full when voting for them. If in doubt, spell it out!
In the event of a tie during a Daykill vote, no one shall be killed.

##VOTE Vecna

If you disagree with me you're not only wrong, you are also defying the wisdom of Tom, the god of this game. I'd hate to be you!
Why did you highlight those posts with my name in them? Is it because you know I didn't roll scum this time? That's it. It must be. What a scumslip.

Thanks for clearing me Jamie!!!

In case anybody doesn't get it, "EDAM" is backwards for "MADE," as in a "MADE MAN" aka mafia. Since it's spelled backwards I'm the opposite of a made man meaning I'm town.

Come MedBay scan with me Jamie we can clear each other and crush this game

Believe it or not, Chaqa has the highest winrate on Among Us in our crew. I've spent all day talking myself off the ledge.
