This whole confirm thing seems a little weird. In my (admittedly not large) experience, people are still put in the game even if they don't confirm.

Does confirming mean anything?

It helps the GM have some assurance that people are ready to play. If start time came and a significant number of people had not confirmed, I would advise any GM to reconsider whether the game is ready to launch. If it's just one person, or even two, you can launch as long as there are subs to hand.
