1074 AD Pope Gregory VII excommunicates the Norman nobleman Robert Guiscard. They will reconsolidate soon.

1075 AD Pope Gregory VII holds a council in the Lateran Palace at Rome. He publishes a decree against laymen investiture.
In the beginning, Christ's disciples were placing the bishops. After they have passed the election was done by the faithful of the region and later by the other bishops of the area. The Ecumenical Councils were degreed that the election was to be made by the other bishops of an area while never forbidding the election by the faithful. In western Europe, the Pope was selecting the bishops which became a problem as he became also a secular authority. Many monarchs (especially in the Holy Roman Empire) saw this as interference to their states. Thus the controversy.
