AD On November 23, King Eadred dies childless after a 9-year reign at Frome. He is succeeded by his 15-year-old nephew, Eadwig, as King of England.

AD Emperor Constantine VII appoints Nikephoros Phokas as commander of the Byzantine field army (Domestic of the Schools) in the East. He gives him the order to prepare a campaign against the Hamdanid emir Sayf al-Dawla. Constantine makes treaties with neighbouring rulers, to seek military aid. In the meanwhile, a Byzantine fleet under Basil Hexamilites deals a crushing defeat to the Hamdanid fleet at Tarsus in Cilicia.

AD Mercia and Northumbria rebel against King Eadwig and switch their allegiance to his brother Edgar. The English nobles agree to divide the kingdom along the Thames River, with Eadwig keeping Wessex and Kent in the south and Edgar ruling in the north.

AD The Byzantines under John Tzimiskes defeat the Hamdanid forces in northern Syria. Emir Sayf al-Dawla is forced to retreat – many of his court companions and ghilman fall in pursuit, while over 1,700 of his Turk cavalry are captured and paraded in the streets of Constantinople.

(I just gave some additional info!)

ADA Byzantine expeditionary force under General Nikephoros Phokas invades northern Syria and sacks Aleppo, capital of the Hamdanid emir Sayf al-Dawla.

AD Emperor Romanos II dies at age 25, probably of poison administered by his wife, Empress Theophano. He is succeeded by his infant son Basil II. Theophano becomes regent and de facto ruler, she names her other son Constantine VIII (only 3 years old) as co-emperor of the Byzantine Empire. She then marries Nikephoros Focas who also claims the crown.

AD Emperor Nikephoros II continues the reconquest of south-eastern Anatolia. He recaptures Cyprus and reorganizes the conquered lands into new themes. In the summer, they take the fortress cities of Anazarbus and Adana.

AD Emperor Nikephoros II conquers the fortress cities of Tarsus and Mopsuestia. The Muslim residents abandon the defence and flee into Syria. Nikephoros completes the conquest of Cilicia.

AD John I returns in triumph to Constantinople after a devastating victory over Rus and Bulgarians. He brings along Boris II, ruler (tsar) of the Bulgarian Empire, and his family, together with the contents of the Bulgarian imperial treasury.
