@Jamie - I read what you wrote. I absolutely see you as a progressive and an ally. But I still think arguments based on history, tradition, etc whilst being valid shouldn’t be the clincher. As I suggest above let’s run with the alternative gender for role names for 60+ games and then see if the community want to go full gender neutral or revert to the traditional role names or indeed run with the alternative role names. We are the community, we’re not tied to anything.

Thank you - but what I also said was that I don't think "Hooker" is necessarily a gendered term. Sex workers can be women or men, male or female.

On the other hand, it is perhaps a somewhat pejorative term. I am not sure on this. Like I said, several of my friends are sex workers. None of them would use the term "hooker" except in a joking way, but again, like I said, that's as much because I think they'd see it as an American term.

I would be entirely in favour of simply using the word "Roleblocker". It's entirely neutral and it describes the role accurately and clearly.

Many of the terms (says Captain Obvious) have to do with the 'roots' of the game. Mafia is... well, mafia. So 'Godfather," "hooker," and the like are a part of THAT culture.

But the existence of "werewolf" proves that the same game could be played with different terms.

It IS up to us what terms we use.

Without implying that anyone was being offensive, gender-ignorant, or mean.

GMs when designing games could CERTAINLY make those changes. And there would probably be much rejoicing.

... and to get us on track for this thread (perhaps the discussion on terminology could continue on the Master Thread for Mafia... not that it was inappropriate to bring it up here... )
