apparently I received the steak at EoD but im only being told about it now. And it was tossed off me.

because you need to submit before Eod to give items away. Cant submit that which youre unaware youre about to receive.

to clarify, i meant they couldnt have taken it off him and then passed it to me.

Obviously they couldve been holding it prior

Getting an item from a corpse and receiving a gift are different messages. Vecna would know the difference.
