Was he a European-born writer who died before January 1, 1820?

No
So most likely either an Asian-born writer who died before 1900, or a European-born writer who died between 1820 and 1900.

So we are likely (though not guaranteed to be) in the 1820-1900 death bucket.

Born in a location that is currently part of the Isle of Man, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, or Ireland?

Perhaps I missed a word (its happened before), but I don't understand this boolean logic.
Q4 established that he is born before 1900
Q7, that he was either European-born, or died before 1820 (or both).
Q9, that he was born in British Isles; therefore telling us nothing about his date of deat.

I think all we know of date of death is that it is before 1900. Am I wrong?

Presuming the UK is considered part of Europe (it should be), you are correct.

In order for a "Yes" answer to be given to "Was he a European-born writer who died before January 1, 1820?", the writer would have had to have both been born in Europe *and* dead before 1820.

We subsequently learned that he was European-born (specifically, British Isles).

Thus, he had to have died after January 1, 1820, or else damo should have answered "Yes" to my question.

There was no question about the UK.

However you know the subject was born in the British Isles (which is in Europe) therefore from the answer 'no' to Q7 you know they did not die before 1820.

Yes, Spartaculous, thank you. I missed the boolean "and". Good thing there are some coders around who know Donald Knuth.
