I don't think you can define a 'best move' type of answer. Besides it also depends on what strategy you want to pursue and on the positioning of the other units, which you have not specified.

If there was a better option from all perspective everybody would do just that.

I assume that the bot is treating AvF as a problem to be solved, not a game to be played. It is, by trial and error (and perfect memory) to find the optimal move for every situation. One of the situations it still is "debating" is this one.

The units after Autumn '01 are almost always positioned:
France - F LON, A BEL, A BUR (post-MUN-bounce)
Austria - F VEN, A SEV, A TYR (post-MUN-bounce)

France builds A PAR, A MUN.

There is an optimal move.

I'm intrigued that when Fairbot plays as France, it always opens MAR-PIE. But when humans play France, it looks we humans have opened MAR-BUR in all but 1 of our victories.

Fairbot is getting more human-like. I tried this 'Hannibal' opening against Fairbot, and he just quit entering orders when he was about to lose:

Sort of :( My game got stuck. I had no build orders in W04, bot built and game map progressed to S05, but game still says it’s W04 Build with no orders for me t to fill.

Another win for MerryBBuck. Note that the French army MAR at the start is in TRIESTE in Autumn 1902 (preventing an Austrian fleet build). Sweet.

As Fairbot shows off some new Austrian moves, zultar comes up with a few himself and, yet again, finds a way to win as France against the bot.

Glad to add another, after many horrible games, in which I had to adjust to the bot's new variations.

http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=338878

I got lucky in playing the Swiss Split against the Porcupine and, interestingly, the bot chose to bounce Ven instead of Mun in A01, which instantly loses the game for Austria (see CaptainMeme's and RoganJosh's excellent posts on FvA openings https://captainmeme.wordpress.com/2020/ ... roganjosh/). It did bounce me in Mun in previous games and I would think that it was programmed to *always* bounce in Mun?

I'd observed (recently) that the bot was doing the "Porcupine" opening 70% of the time, and the "Anti-Alpine" 30% of the time. Both with the Rumanian variation. Until your match, I'd always observed the bot bouncing Mun in A01, when France opened to Eng. But when France opened to MAO, the bot was splitting 50/50 between bouncing Mun and bouncing Ven in A01. But this is based on our rather small # of games, and I don't know when the bot gets retrained.

Three more human wins:

Superwerty: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=338944
Randaz20: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=338941

...and my own contribution, which took to 1919: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=338911

After my long match, I searched and found 98 bot matches that went to 1910+. (Including both Austria and France). Of those, the bot has won 8, drawn 8, and lost 82.
