Rewards for Face to Face Tournament Winners

Hello everyone,

The webdip team has decided that going forward we will be rewarding players who win Face to Face Diplomacy Tournaments. The general criteria will be 15 participants minimum, but if this excludes tournaments we will reconsider this.

If you are a webdiplomacy player and win a tournament, get the director to report it to us and we will award the following:

First place: 1000 :points:
Second place: 750 :points:
Third place: 500 :points:

Anyone placing in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd will also receive a site banner congratulating them. At some point in the future I will be making a page and/or a forum icon for tournament winners which will be back applied to everyone we've awarded points too.

Claesar is being awarded 750 points for his Dutch Championship 2018 2nd place.
Durga is being awarded 500 points for her WDC 2017 3rd place.

As we become aware of more tournaments or participants this list may grow. If you have placed in a tournament recently please let us know at [email protected]

You should award Balki for getting the top board, honestly.

That's a good suggestion, and I personally agree that his achievement is worth more than mine. However, since this is just a new initiative aimed at promoting FtF play, we'd like to keep it at a clear goal that doesn't require case-by-case debates. We might expand the scope later.

I agree with Durga that getting to the top board on a WDC should be recognised.

And I promise I'm not just saying this so I can claim points retrospectively. I don't have any use for webdip points after all.

P.S. Congrats to Claesar. How was the Dutch championships? I'm disappointed I couldn't make it.

Case by case? There's literally one case and everyone can agree upon its merit. I doubt balki cares about points, but he does care about principle and recognition.

I do understand the desire to want to reward everyone for good performance at Face to Face events. And Balki making top board is of course an accomplishment. So is earning a top country medal in a tournament or solo'ing a game. In the future we may offer prizes for those but at this point I am honoring an agreement I made with the organizers at WDC to reward top 3 with a banner and some type of prize. As well as linking the live game play to the site's banner for everyone to follow.

You may also recall that prior to the start of WDC there was a banner letting people know that top 3 would receive a reward and a congratulatory banner.

At the moment I'm working on validating awards for another 5 or 6 tournaments over the past 2 years. The work to do so simply for top 3 takes some time and I already have people waiting on me to get to that work. So for now this approach honors agreements made to our Face to Face directors.

It is our hope that in conjunction with better advertisement of F2F events, complimentary pauses for people engaging in a tournament game, and prize awards for top 3 in a tournament we will be able to provide additional motivation for our members to attend these events.

We're also looking into what can be done with tools like the player map to help F2F organizers better reach out to possible players in the area of their tournaments.

And as we go we'll consider adding additional rewards to help support our fellow Diplomacy players in the future.

That said, we do still have to make sure the volunteer hours we have are covering everything else and currently this is the maximum we are willing to commit too in terms of validating tournament standings and awarding points. There are some plans to expand our capacity that may change that, but thanks for your understanding in the meantime.

organizers at WDC likely don't care who gets what points on webdip and would be happy to see the top board rewarded fwiw

No matter what system we use, somebody will be unhappy. But if we alter who we award points too against what we previously stated in our banner we'd be making an unfair system. We will keep your suggestion in mind for the next time though.

Aw that’s too bad, Balki would have really loved a pat on the head from JMO.

Hahaha who would even care. Seriously. No one.

If someone's angry about a member getting rewarded for being on the top board at wdc they have bigger issues.

I can't imagine there are people on this site who throw a fit at the slightest grievance. That's unpossible.

Not trying to argue with the criteria because many FTF events don't use the top board formula for determining the champion. You picked the simplest and clearest way to award points for ftf tournaments in general. However, in the case of the last two US WDC events, which were huge ftf tournaments, making the top board was the goal of any competitive player. Moreover, it is entirely possible to make the top board as one of the top three in the tournament, but fall out of the top three because you don't top the top board, which is guaranteed to be full of the bloodiest cut throats in The Hobby. Moreover, if one of the other players in the tournament, one who doesn't make the cut, does well enough in one of the "consolation" games, those count on the overall scoring. So a player with a lesser achievement gets webdip points. Not that webdip points count for a hill of beans anyway.

Yes, I agree that in such large events the organisers should rank the top board 1-7, followed by those who didn't make top board, in the final score. But they don't.

I was against Balki getting an award for anything until I realised it was a pat on the head from Jmo. Now I'm all in.
