Mass Child and LLama Sacrifice

Seems that 140 children, most between the ages of 8 and 12, and 200 baby llamas were sacrificed at the same time back in 1450AD in coastal Peru.
The best reasoning seems to be that there was a lot of coastal flooding and they sacrificed that which was most dear to them in order to appease the gods and stop the bad weather.
The children had their heads painted red, were killed by a strong slash across the chest and then it's probable that their hearts were ripped out.

Can't even wrap my head around what it must have been like to live back then.
