[Discord] Two Playtests, Prep for 2024 Tournament

#1 Post by nopunin10did » Thu Jun 15, 2023 2:22 pm

Double Dip Playtests
on the NoPunIn10Did Discord Server

Signups are open for the Double Dip Playtests planned for this July!
https://forms.gle/chNMTxy7H9EFZS3J7

We will be playing two new variants: Succession & Legacy and Sub-Saharan.

Both are ten-player DP (Diplomacy Points) variants with armed neutral units. Both will be year-capped at 10 years of play. Please use the signup sheet to let me know if you are interested in playing one of these games or if you want to observe / join the sub roster.

What's this about a Tournament?
Back in 2018, I ran the Tournament Through Time on the PlayDiplomacy forums (using Slack for communication). The good news is that it's coming back, though I'll just be hosting it on my own site and Discord server. Both of these variants are planned for inclusion in the 2024 Tournament Through Time, so if you've never played a DP variant before, this would be a good opportunity to get your feet wet!

Could you create a document for the rules of the above two variants? I'm interested in joining, but can't access your site. (I would like to look at the rules before I join.)

You can't access this site?

It's just a standard wordpress blog. Does your internet provider block wordpress?

And yes, I have PDFs for the rules on both, though I'm hosting the full-resolution copies of all the maps on the same site.

I can upload the rules to you directly via Discord if you like.

The rules on Minor Powers units are contradictory.

It says " A minor power’s army or fleet differs from their normal counterparts in that they are stationary; their units will never occupy any space other than where they started."

However in section 8 it says that you can spend DPs to order them to move.

So can they move, or not?

They can be given move orders, but their moves always bounce, even if they bounce with nothing.

So, they can move to cut support, but they will always bounce back to their home territory?

What if they are displaced in a Spring turn? Can they retreat?

Right, they can cut support and potentially bounce player units heading to that territory. If they bounce a territory, even if they bounce with nothing at all, that territory is still ineligible for retreats that turn.

They can’t retreat themselves, however, so they always disband.

It’s a mechanic that’s worked really well in the years of GMing and playing DP variants.

Oh, and if they are dislodged in Spring, but the SC becomes vacant again by the end of Fall, they rebuild their original unit.
