Do you have your electrical panel setup to use a generator? Is it in the basement or the garage?

Or are you thinking of just using extension cords from the generator to power specific devices (e.g. fridge, your desktop computer so you don't miss the move deadline).

There's just too many variables to give a one size fits all answer. For example, do you use only electricity or do you use has as well?
If you have had, is it a "mains supply" or is it "stand alone" using a tank or tanks?
You can cut electricity demand by shifting some energy demands to gas, typically providing heating, hot water, cooking.
What's your location? Urban or country? What climate? Eg North Dakota, St Petersburg or Canada compared to Southern Arizona or Alice Springs in middle of Australia? Edinburgh or Naples?
How much land is available to exploit wind and/ or solar panels to batteries?
Who occupies the house? How many, what are their energy demands?
Two Chaps with pet cats or Two Ladies with pet dogs? A Chap with Lovely Wife with two sons and four daughters, oldest fifteen, youngest four?
Any solution will have to fit your specific needs, so do a systematic review of all the variables & needs. Then consult an electrical engineer. Consult as many people as possible, users with similar circumstances to yours, and suppliers/ contractors.
Specialists in renewable electricity will generally have expertise at combining different sources with mains supply and back up capabilities
