I don't think perfect pitch is that important to composition. Not being tonedeaf helps, but really what you want is a good understanding of music theory (and even then, less is often more when you're talking about complexity in songwriting). Perfect pitch is mostly useful for sticky playing along with songs on an instrument, starting any music with singing before instrumentation comes in, or as a cool trick to show off.

I agree that music theory is more useful in composing, but I also feel like being able to clearly hear a chord in your head is helpful to quickly process what you're writing or what you're about to write.
