Keeping a list

#1 Post by JF1981 » Wed May 06, 2020 3:12 pm

So I've finished just over 100 games now and it made me look back at my games as I wanted to see who I worked well with, got on with etc...

This led me to the creation of a list of "Likes and dislike"- you can imagine I used other words to describe those on my list

Got me wondering if any of you folks have similar lists?

A pointless exercise. Someone who acts perfectly trustworthy in one game can be a compulsive liar in the next. Diplomacy players are rarely consistent from one game to another, and most change radically as they gain experience. Far better to treat every player you encounter as if it's the first time you've met them. You get a far better read of how someone will act in a game if you focus purely on how they're acting in the game rather than a imperfect memory of some previous event. You also avoid the risk of metagaming.

Yes, basing decisions in a game on a list of past grievances or loyalties will eventually lead to stale games. That's a good way to make a rut. This is the path to the dark side. Turn away!

Yes, there are lots of lists kept at webdiplomacy. I would caution readers against expressing the desire to be included on some of the lists that are compiled. For example the Almighty Mods are rumoured to have lists of dissidents, candidates for their Gulags.
The best advice I can offer is to avoid being included on any list that names Maniac.

Quite so. Levels of inconsistency are often inconsistent.

Also, some of you are reputed to have multiple accounts. SO such a list would be meaningless. The ones you 'like' are likely to be the ones you 'dislike.' Not that such things as multiple accounts have ever been proven. err... rarely been proven... errrr... ok, we prove 'em all the time, but still...

That's it Octavious our Oracle.. you're a bloomin' genius. Similar to known and unknown unknowns...
Are there are consistent constincies and inconsistent consistencies, and consistent inconsistencies and inconsistent inconsistencies? It's too much for my daffy old clockwork brain.

I am consistent with my gaming, never stab an ally nor betray one. My word is of a gentleman and not be taken back or forgotten when convenient. But be careful, if you stab me, make sure I die this turn or I will do all in my power to take you down.

#10 it can be seen on your stats. :) Survives: 45%. I think it is quite high.

That would be unacceptably high, except that it mostly comes from his 'variant stats'. If he plays mostly 1v1s, it's not strange to have a high number of Survives.

Well, I have of course a number of these too, but also I like most the modern Europe variant which is easier to survive.
