Because its fun, and because it raises the question of whether bots can anticipate multiple-fleet convoys. ( ? )

Surely it doesn't matter whether an army or a fleet moves into that position, if the AI is only analysing the current board state. There is a risk of your fleet hitting just a much as there is with a convoyed army.
I don't see what difference it would make to the AI's calculations.

If the convoy is the move of a French army from England to St Petersburg using a number of French fleets, then I would assume an opposing player, either AI or proper human would have thought it probable/possible that it might occur, probable (high) that the French army would move to Scandinavia/Denmark (?) or St Petersburg.
Well played, I looked at the archive maps, but don't know which countries had Al dipbots & which had proper human players
