Diplomacy Introduction

#1 Post by Jale17 » Sat Dec 04, 2021 2:52 pm

Does anyone know a good video or article to introduce friends to the game? Something to pique their interest without overwhelming them at first.

Oliver Lugg's 'Diplomacy: The Game Of Knife' is perfect for people who like video essays. The length might be a bit intimidating but it requires no Diplomacy knowledge and is never particularly heavy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUaLEgzvMQs

Famous DnD youtuber Matt Colville also made a Diplomacy video, which is a very good introduction to the game if you're actually looking to learn the rules (fun fact, this site's registration system broke for about a week after he made it due to the influx of users): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWt0AQWjhPg

David Hill's Grantland Article 'Diplomacy: Board Game of the Alpha Nerds' is probably the best known article about the game. It goes pretty in-depth on the events of a World Championship Final: https://grantland.com/features/diplomac ... pha-nerds/

This American Life podcast has an episode about David Hill, and his taking a US Ambassador to back him up at a World Championship, listening in to his conversations and giving him advice. Well worth a listen! https://www.thisamericanlife.org/531/go ... ck/act-one

Popular Mechanic's article on 3 time World Champion Andrew Goff is a fascinating read. It's more about him and less about the game, but it still gives great insight into how a Diplomacy player thinks: https://www.popularmechanics.com/cultur ... drew-goff/

This one's more of a thing to show after they've actually gotten invested in the game, since it's much more strategy-focused and requires knowledge of how Dip works, but Legendary Tactic's interview with Tanya Gill (a webDip player) about Austria strategy is excellent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o1mECEIKWc

And finally I'll drop a plug for a few of my own things :D Imo one of the most interesting things to ever happen in Diplomacy was the 2012 webDip World Cup's 'eternal game', which lasted 3 and a half years in real time and 105 in-game years. I wrote a reddit article about it here which might be a fun read for newbies (doesn't really require any game knowledge): https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/com ... s_reached/

Myself and Ezio also commentated all 105 years of this game on our youtube channel, DiploStrats, although that's much more of a time investment than the article! Good viewing for people who like podcasts though: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 5WXdGP5rnL
