Alternative Counter Set / Sprites

#1 Post by Muscovy_Duck » Mon Aug 19, 2019 5:27 am

Would it be possible to have alternative sprites particularly for armies?

I find it a bit odd to have a modern battle tank symbol when an infantry soldier would seem more appropriate. Or perhaps we could have a cannon or the original shell?

In a similar vein, would it be possible to have coloured pieces matching their national colours? Territorial control could be indicated by the palest wash with the pieces more stridently painted, or have no territorial indications at all since only supply centres are relevant and we don't paint seas!

Overall though I congratulate the site developers for this excellent resource.

It is possible to change the look of units, as well as to give units a distinctive look for each country. vDiplomacy features many maps in which this is the case. Take, for example, this variant: https://vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=155 In this map you can see the units: https://vdiplomacy.net/map.php?gameID=3 ... Type=large

Those units look awful. Please, do not take them anywhere near webDip.

On a more serious note: country specific units is not necessary if the map is colored. It is better (i.e., easier to read the map) if the unit design only indicate army/fleet, and the background color indicates which power the unit belongs to.

Doesn't work in Spring if your unit is in a foreign SC.

You are new, so perhaps you have never struggled to see if it's a fleet or an army underneath movement arrows and dislodged "explosions".

If I had a choice it would be for something less realistic but more visible on a small screen. Say, square for army, triangle for fleet, each in the owner's colour.

Yes, diplomat61

On our diplomacy wallmap we used squares and triangles. Very clear. And of course the realworld board does not change colour when a foreign unit enters it!

Anything is possible with enough dev work. However, we are currently spread a little thin on dev stuff. If you have experience and would like to contribute, we always accept new devs. You could also submit a request for this on our GitHub page where it would be easier for us to track. Unfortunately this particular feature would probably be lower priority for us right now, as we are currently working on some bigger, exciting changes.
