World 901

#1 Post by kestasjk » Tue May 16, 2023 12:38 am

Hi all,

I peruse the diplomacy subreddit every now and one comment related to World 901 and how it's a good variant but there's not enough places to play it. Do people here think it would be good to add World 901, or are there any other non-gimmicky variants (that will last etc) that we should add into the official fold?

It has been a while since we added a new variant and since I've had to spend a couple of dev cycles mostly outside webDip it might be nice to add a good variant for an easy win.

I could set up a poll if people have a few options. And "No more, things are diluted enough" or "Can we remove this/that variant" are valid responses.

Rgds,
KEstas

I think we tried to add KW901 a while ago, because it really is an excellent variant: https://webdiplomacy.net/variants.php#KnownWorld_901

But we disabled it again because the 'transform' rule (if a unit is in a coastal SC, it can use its order to transform into an army/fleet) was implemented in quite a hacky way and broke the orders page. I'd love to see it if this is fixable!

I think it relied on API modifications that vdip had and webdip didn't. Maybe?

Ages ago I looked at total games vs options, and concluded that the more options we have, the fewer games get played overall. The graphs will be still linked in the old forum if someone wanted to dig them out.

A good solution to this problem would be a game queue, where you can select several settings you'd be happy to accept and then get put in a game once there were 7 players whose settings can be satisfied. But the way webdip's adjudicator works didn't make that easy to build. So I didn't.

How necessary is this rule? If the map was added to WebDip in vanilla fashion without this rule, would it still be a good variant?

Since the transform rule is NOT usual to the variant (it was implemented with this additional rule by Kaner in his vDip port, for reasons I am still unsure about), JUNK IT!!!

I would love to see KW901 back here.

A game queue would be a suitable solution to this issue, as it would allow you to select several settings you are willing to accept before being placed in a game. I believe it relied on API changes that vdip had but webdip did not.
