Re: Taking over for missing player and not being able to retreat a unit.

You’re sure there was an empty non-standoffed province for the unit to retreat to?

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

So to the collective opinion in here is a bad thing to reach the end and forfeit the solo respecting the co-player who helped you to this point.
Couldn't have said it better myself. You're not "respecting" anyone by "letting" them have a Draw when you could Solo. You're "patronizing" them.

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge

Game 3 is missing Laszlo_L, and bo_sox (who said he was willing to pass, but leaves us short unless someone wants to join).

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Prince: Once again, we are not talking about the same thing. There is nothing wrong with settling for a Draw, if winning is impossible and a Draw is the best result based on how the game plays out. We are talking about making a Draw your ultimate goal, even forgoing the chance to solo just to mainta...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Rogan, your last paragraph is right on. In the game in question, the 2-way alliance was formed early on, was bragged about in press (so no question it existed early on), and both had chances to stab the other when down to 3 but refused. One had a chance to grab the 18th centre but refused. It was a ...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Let me put it this way. If we're playing chess and I get tired and purposely let you take my queen, is that respectful? I think all players doing their best to win is the only legitimate way to play any game or sport.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Yeah, we're getting pretty far from the topic here. The Draw participants in the game in question were not newbies: one was "Experienced", the other a "Member." The issue isn't new players "hoping" for a Draw as a reasonable result. The issue is players "trying" for a Draw as their goal in the game.

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge

You'll have to give us instructions on exactly how to set up the games. Will you be setting them up as private games and sending us a passcode? Is it the responsibility of someone in the game to do so?

Re: Fantasy Premier League

I looked at it and it looks like it requires quite a bit of week to week management, not just pick 'em and wait to the end of the season. Not sure I have time for that.

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge

I'll give this a try. I'm a newer player, but I guess I've got a reasonable GR. I'm 138th place in the August Classic rankings. So I guess that makes it so far: G1 1. MadMarx - 4.5 (GR = 350.189) 2. Yonni - 5 3. ben9990 - 10 (message on Discord to start) 4. ATC - 13.5 (GR = 255.26) 5. swordsman3003 ...

Re: how tf am i suppose to join games?

I joined in March and I have to agree that the reliability rules were a bit opaque to me (and I'm a lawyer used to reading rules, and I did read the rules on this site). I agree with Octavious that there should be a message to new users welcoming them to the site and introducing them to some basic c...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

To return this chess analogy to the original post, the question is not whether a draw is a satisfying result for a novice player. It may well be. But that is Draw as a result. The behaviour this thread is about is Draw as "goal". To use your chess analogy, if the novice player can put the better pla...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Ιf a player is not a strong one he cannot aspire to a solo he has to go with a draw.
If you don't aspire to a solo, you're in the wrong game.

You won't believe how many times I've won baseball games by my self-imposed win condition of swinging and missing 3 balls as often as possible.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Because one is draw as necessary tactic. The other is draw as goal. The goal should never be to do less than win.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

That is different, Sploak. I have also agreed to a draw when I had 16 or even 17 centres, when there was a risk that I would be attacked by the other two and lose centres. This is particularly true in SoS scoring. Agreeing to a draw when its the only option or where you face losing if you do not dra...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Leaving Diplomacy aside to just talk about poker, at my casino softplaying is illegal. If you check the nuts in position on the river, you will be penalized. Happened at the WSOP too (https://www.cardschat.com/f13/soft-play-penalized-at-wsop-164248/). Analogy: if you have 17 centres and can take the...
