Re: War, what is it good for?

No they couldn't. Zelensky is not the shy and retiring type. If there's a deal he wants and it involves the West lifting sanctions he will make sure the world knows about it. It would be politically impossible for the West not to fall into line. It's a moot point, regardless. A lot of the West would...

Re: War, what is it good for?

Kyiv is out of range of Russian artillary, and it has not been spared air strikes and missile strikes. It has also not been subjected to heavy air and missile strikes. This is not a controversial statement. This is obvious. Russia have, by their own standards at least, restricted themselves to a li...

Re: War, what is it good for?

It's fairly small beer as far as supply chains go. Russia will be able to have it back to full operational capacity in short order. I imagine there will be some genuine short term problems, but not much more. The power of the strike is far more in the political than the practical. With regard to str...

Re: War, what is it good for?

A couple of things to think about.

What do you think the West's reaction would be if Russia were to drop a nuke on Kiev?

What would the reaction be if Russia was to devastate Kiev with an intense bombardment of its heaviest conventional weapons? A few FOABs, that sort of thing.

Re: War, what is it good for?

Someone's getting fired in Russia for that. Great morale boosting coup for Ukraine. It looks like the peace talks are struggling somewhat, which is a shame. The most likely scenario seems to be Russia simply taking the entire Donbas region and a land bridge to Crimea and sitting on it. Possibly endi...

Re: War, what is it good for?

What I'm comprehending, from your failure to point to any examples of me being an apologist for Putin, is that you know full well that it's not true. In which case a bit of humility on your part may be appropriate. Go on, try it. It's good for the soul.

Re: War, what is it good for?

Are you now seriously trying to suggest, with a straight face, that when you called for Putin's removal what you had in mind was him dying of old age  Will you be applying a similar approach to your preferred method of justice? All criminals will be confined to a small cell for eternity after d...

European gas crunch approaches

So this week we see one of the more interesting developments in the diplomatic war between Russia and the West come to the crunch point. Russia has insisted that all future payments for Russian gas must be made in roubles, which has helped see the Russian currency recover the majority of value it lo...

Re: War, what is it good for?

You don't know what the word apologist means, do you? I challenge you to find a single instance of it. I can point to multiple examples of the opposite. And yet you call me a fantasist  Removing him is the best option for future peace. Not bloodlust, peace. Gotcha. All we need in order to achie...

Re: War, what is it good for?

Putin must be defeated Russia must be destabilised Russians must be bribed to defect and sabotage equipment A peace deal attractive to both sides is not an option Given the chance Russia will return and steamroll its opposition Which of these statements are you not agreeing with? Because you've been...

Re: War, what is it good for?

You want more? I have grown tired of your recent bloodlust, ora. It's not something that I have much time for, and frankly it's come as something of a shock to find it so prominently displayed. Peterlund's combination of European jingoism with an enthusiasm to portray anyone who may disagree as a Pu...

Re: War, what is it good for?

Because it's interesting and not widely reported. I assume that you are perfectly capable of not reading. It's not a difficult skill to master. :-) Putin will loose this war and he must be humiliated in the process too He doesn't much look like he's losing anything. Ukraine have had several cities w...

Re: War, what is it good for?

An import interview with Zelensky by CNN: "I'm ready for negotiations with him. I was ready for the last two years. And I think that without negotiations we cannot end this war," he told CNN's Fareed Zakaria. "I think that we have to use any format, any chance in order to have a possibility of negot...

Re: War, what is it good for?

I'm always cautious when it comes to German U-turns as they have a remarkable habit of continuing onwards with what they were doing before and then, a few years later, looking confused when the subject is brought up and claiming that their position was misunderstood. Now, for example, some weeks aft...

Re: War, what is it good for?

Russia claims to have used a hypersonic missle for the first time in Ukraine. Bully for Russia. I'm not entirely sure why we're meant to find this newsworthy. Russia have been trying to remind us of their nuclear capability pretty much every day since even before the war started. I don't think we e...

Russian public opinion

It's all going swimmingly! Well, not quite, but not far off. There is a widespread belief that sanctions will make life harder, but more Russians than not believe that it's worth it. A few headline figures. Russians who see themselves as liberators: 69% (13% as aggressors) Putin's approval rating: 6...
