Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

From twitter:
having a lot of feelings about Afghanistan today

I deployed there twice--once in 2008 and once in 2009-10

It was already obvious that the Taliban would sweep through the very instant we left

And here we are today

Re: Cookies; accept or deny

And I must say that while as a dev I find all this a bit vexing, as a user I often take the time to fine tune my preferences I must say, as a user and EU citizen, this law has negatively affected my experience hugely. Every little website which asks me for permission instead of simply looking at my...

Again, bloody typos, *blackholes, not blackbodies.

And yes, I studied physics at university, but i don't think that alone qualifies me as an expert, rather than a webdip opinion haver.

Re: Arguments for God

Wasn’t the opposite universe being required for creation an outside force? Yeah, again, presupposing the rules of existence applied before the creation of existence... but I am kinda assuming the opposite universe would see us as the outside force, so that just requires universes to self create in ...

Re: Arguments for God

So, then all that is required to spontaneously create oneself is equilibrium? I suppose yes. The expansion of space may indeed require a negative energy 'pressure' - where a positive energy (mass as we understand it) tends to do the opposite, resulting in gravity. But the mechanism I was describing...

Re: Arguments for God

Okay, so taking what I can from that. The general situation is that these virtual gluons and photons violate the conservation of matter / energy, but are very small, and the general rule is that the larger the mass the shorter the time it can exist before self annihilating? Then how can that be gen...

Re: Arguments for God

The thing is, this "nothing" that Lawrence has popularized is still something. He's tried redefining the term. I will admit that I haven't read (Lawrence) Krauss, but I believe the distinction here is between philosophical nothing and physical nothing. Classical Physics would have allowed an empty ...

Re: Arguments for God

One interesting part of this debate, was Cosmic Skeptic (the atheist) saying IF there's a timeless cause (which is what I'm arguing for in this thread) it has to be a personal agent. Do you agree with the Cosmic Skeptic on that? No, in fact I think I would disagree (though having not listened to Co...

Re: Arguments for God

Virtual particles create themselves all the time. Saying their is a quantum field from which they become excited and then returns to the ground state of doesn't change the fact that they spontaneously create themselves. Hi orathaic, I am certainly no scientist, so I am showing my own ignorance here...

Re: Arguments for God

God is the mountains, God is the sun, God is the quarks and every quantum field. I can show you all of these things. Which is all good stuff. God is glorious, magnificent, beautiful and terrible and all that. But what I have to ask, as it seems somewhat crucial from the perspective humanity, is thi...

Re: Arguments for God

I can be shown the existence of quarks, and gluons, and whatever other particles. I cannot be shown God. God is the mountains, God is the sun, God is the quarks and every quantum field. I can show you all of these things. But you can't use the reductionist view of individual quantum fields to expla...

Re: Arguments for God

If we define the universe as existence then yes, that would be logically consistent. But only if it doesn't infinitely regress back in time which means a part had to be outside of time Great! So we're done here. There is no requirement for the universe to have been created. The universe might alway...

Re: Arguments for God

I like this. I am in awe of it as the Universe. But, I don't need to call it other names. I don't need to "conceptualise it as God". It is already a marvel as it is. I'd like to add to this, I discovered this concept on my own at about the age of 16 (well while reading something else) and only prob...

Re: Arguments for God

@Jamie, my very clear and understandable concept of God is God = Universe. I believe the Universe exists, and that there is this actual realoobeyond my perception. I believe we can make logical sense of aspects of this Universe. That(as Spinoza put it) instead of prayer, it makes more sense to study...

Re: Brexit Food Shortages Beginning in Britain Now

I think I agree on the 'missing the point' bit, though I was going to say, my clear position was the regulating who can work is not a 'free market'. That is a regulated one. Whether there is a shortage of workers because of Brexit, or because England has become known as an unwelcome racist place (cf...

British trade unions should acknowledge Comrade Farage is a revolutionary socialist, maybe give him an award, the Trotsky Medallion for Services to the Union movement?
Some kind of National Socialist? Interesting..

Re: Brexit Food Shortages Beginning in Britain Now

The free market solution is not to interfere by importing cheap labour who will accept "whatever's on offer" but to force employers to become more effective at purchasing labour domestically, Is that not the definition of a regulated market. You regulate who can come and work in the market thus mak...

Re: Southern Border

I think it had a considerable effect on seasonable workers from border towns who used to cross regularly for agri work and want to know they can return home easily and often.

This who entered by plane and overstayed a visa becoming 'illegal' were not affected.
