Re: Gunboat Strategy: France

I am very inexperienced at gunboat, so what I say is not based on experience, but I think that the Zig/Zag openings Claesar mentions (I use his terminology here) is better than the Maginot opening in high level gunboat games. Suppose that Germany does not move to Burgundy. Then the only difference b...

Re: Mentor Program Workshop 1.18

I found it particularly funny that Turkey suggested to Russia that he should move Warsaw to Silesia, and in the same message assumed that Germany would allow Russia access to Sweden.

Re: Retreat rules

You can retreat to any territory that you could have successfully moved into in the last turn without help of another unit.

Re: Convoy question

TrPrado is correct. I believe that ziran is incorrect, though. I think that if the fleet in Aegean has support to hold, the convoy will still fail. The reason the convoy would fail in the first place is because the fact that Aegean is attacked by Constantinople with a force of 2 exactly cancels out ...

Re: EIDRaS Ratings

in Ghost Rating, losses against expert opponents and beginners are not rated equally. Yes, they are. This is because GR doesn't have a constant k-factor - the ratings of all players in this game is an input into the k-factor, which cancels out the earlier weightings. Have a play with some numbers i...

Re: EIDRaS Ratings

How does it differ from Ghost Rating? Tons of respect to The Ghost Maker for creating and maintaining a ratings system for us but it had several shortcomings. The part that bothered me most was that losses against expert opponents and beginners are rated equally. That is not the case for EIDRaS whi...

Re: January Ghost Ratings Published

The way to do the same in GR is by changing your expected part of the pot from (your own GR) / (Sum of the GRs of all the players) into (your own GR times your bet) / (Sum of (the GR times the bet) of all the players).

Re: January Ghost Ratings Published

I believe that vRanking at vDiplomacy handles it the following way: A CD position is 'worth' a certain percentage of the pot. This is the amount of :points: someone has to pay to take over a CD position and it is equal to some number just larger than 1/2 times the percentage of the supply centers of...

Re: Civil Disorder..players in a game should get the option of switching from their country to one that has no player

I agree that it is a bad idea to allow players already in the game to take over CD spots, for the reasons mentioned before. I also agree with Kremmen that it would be better if players taking over CD positions would pay at least a small number of points. That way, people have invested a bit in their...

Re: O.9999999... = 1?

@ ghug

Given that every two different real numbers have a real number in between them, if you think that 1 > 0.99999999...., could you name me one number that is bigger than 0.99999999...., but smaller than 1?
