Re: Travel Destinations
Best place in the world for the sheer awe factor has to be Egypt, specifically the temples in the Luxor region. The pyramids are soso, and the tombs are a bit shit (a hole in the ground is a hole in the ground), but the temples are stunning. On a scale of 1 to 10, with Stonehenge at a 3, Knossos at ...

Re: Travel Destinations
Morocco is ok. I wouldn't rate it as bucket list material though. And I'm extremely curious about what was great about Casablanca :P. The Atlas mountains are pretty great, as it's nice to go somewhere green and wet with a bit of snow after being in Marrakech for a few days. Marrakech itself is an ex...

Re: A brief overview of viable openings in GvI
I have and I did. The thing is the enjoyable bit is working out how everything works and what to do. Having a big list of other people's ideas is like baking with a shop bought premade mixture, or making a curry by pouring a jar of sauce over some meat. Where's the fun in that?

Re: Thinking about a casual, instructional game format
There are far too many unranked games these days. We're getting to the stage where ranking will grind to a halt if we're not careful! I think we run the risk of over exaggerating the dangers. It's a game iin the spotlight, and it would be between 7 well thought of players. It's about as low risk ad ...

Yeah, no one in their right mind would touch this with a ten foot barge pole. As much as you should never ever enter civil disorder if you can help it, if I were you I'd enter civil disorder.

This is obviously some strange usage of the word "works" that I wasn't previously aware of.

Oh, it's a flood defence thing? Bloody hell, you Yanks do love your 20th century solutions, don't you? Your coasts really are in trouble if that's the way your instincts point

Re: Thinking about a casual, instructional game format
Well, I couldn't take part in a gunboat game unless you'd want the followers treated to persistent mild cursing and exclamations of confusion. I could potentially sign up to a full press game, but I'm very much against any public commentary. Perhaps it's worth putting the comments to the followers i...

That's a nasty sounding cough you have there, Maniac. I've heard that the mod team were considering recruiting you, but probably best to put it on hold for now because of health considerations.

Re: Trump calls for "pathway to citizenship" in exchange for a wall.
As much as I accept the hypocrisy comment, as anti Trump arguments go it seems pretty weak. Sometimes I think it must be a variation of the dead cat strategy. There are so many avenues to attack Trump that he deliberately invents additional targets that are far less damaging yet his enemies find irr...

Re: Thinking about a casual, instructional game format
That's dangerous. My diplomacy reputation (as much as I have one) has been manufactured almost entirely by pretending that what actually happened was what I intended all along. Telling an attentive audience what's actually going through my mind in real time will put the kibosh on that good and prope...

Re: EIDRaS Ratings
I'd be lying if I claimed to have followed that reasoning :p.
At the end of the day I think that we need a few illustrative examples showing the differences between the systems in various scenarios. Then we can judge what aspects we find acceptable and what doesn't seem to work.

Re: EIDRaS Ratings
Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. Consider the case in which you (and lets assume you're a high ranking player) go up against a player new to the site but high ranking elsewhere, and you lose. The other player gets a significant boost to their webDip ranking under both systems, but the difference ...

Re: EIDRaS Ratings
My limited understanding of GR was that each player essentially contributed to a point pot, with the size of the contribution determined by their current rating, and who took the points was determined purely by the results. I rather liked the idea of it. This system I understand even less, but I'm n...

Re: Idiots Guide to Diplomacy: Anatomy of a Top Ranked Player
For my $.02, the value of gunboat is in sharpening your fundamental tactics. True, you won't be able to figure out multi-party convoys, but they are esoteric, edge cases. Knowing how to take StP from the north, how to take (or hold) Munich or Warsaw or Tunis against equal force - get those things r...

Re: Idiots Guide to Diplomacy: Anatomy of a Top Ranked Player
That's an interesting variation of the 1v1 idea. Yeah, I can see value in that. Out of curiosity what's the victory condition on those?
