Re: Disabling press

There should be a mute button next to the player name on the game page.

Re: How often do games draw?

Also, I think people get the numbers wrong. For every failed 4 > 3 whittle, you need three successful 4 > 3 whittles just to make up for the lost points. For every failed 5 > 4 whittle, you need four successful 5 > 4 whittles just to make up for the lost points. I think everyone should look through ...

Re: How often do games draw?

There’s no way for Germany to throw two (more after Russia gets back Moscow) dots to Turkey after he moves back that far. Turkey is never able to pick up Stp and he can’t get more than one of Munich or Berlin, even one is a stretch requiring a brilliant German move and coordination. Your desire to ...

Re: How often do games draw?

I'm not sure why you are focusing on Turkey. In that game, it is Russia (you!) that decides whether there will be a whittle or not. And that's a 5WD, so you need to be 80% sure of succeeding in the whittle to try. And you'll have to assume that T will attack you as soon as you attack G. Doesn't look...

Re: How often do games draw?

I’m very happy for every person who’s actually able to survive the draw in just Iberia and for the opponents who didn’t whittle them, but that’s strictly due to an honourable player culture and persists despite, not because of, DSS. Are we talking gunboat or full press? With or without a time limit...

Re: All Diplomacy Scoring Stinks

Here's my problem with the 'always solo'-crowd, in a separate post since it's not aimed at anyone in particular. Most of these players wants an action filled game from start to finish. They want people to attack and take risks. And that's a sentiment which is fairly easy to understand and agree with...

The current system provides incentives for behavior at set levels. Those levels could be varied. It is easy to imagine flexing the rewards to drawing down from the status quo while still providing a closed/zero-sum/ordinally-rational system.
This reads just like mumbo-jumbo to me.

Re: All Diplomacy Scoring Stinks

Unclear what part you think is 'not true'.

Treating a draw like a cancel is the same as treating any draw as a 7WD, and it means that a draw is still better than a loss.

Re: All Diplomacy Scoring Stinks

@Yigg For a site like webDiplomacy, and a long term ranking like GR, I agree with you. For tournaments with a limited number of participants and time constraints, scoring systems does make a big difference. But then again, if there is a time constraint, then there is no such thing as playing for the...

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!

Players are additionally rewarded one point for any SC they control at the game's end (excluding 1v1s; any win has an SC count of 18). Gunboats are rewarded with half of the point amounts as standard and public press games. Teams will play 3 1v1 games as France and 3 1v1 games as Austria. To ensure...

Re: You've Never Used Turkey's Best Opening

Nice article, guys. With the Smy > Ank move, I find this opening to be extremely pro R. * Sev > Arm means slingshot juggernaught * Sev > BLA means T is set up for moving the fleet to Con in F01 * Sev > Rum means T was let down by R but without any immediate way of retaliating. The Smyrna H is more i...

Re: Mohsen Fakhrizadeh Assassination and other Middle Eastern developments

I mean, all the nuclear weapon powers developed nuclear weapons through their nuclear programs, and all the non-nuclear weapon powers did not. But I'm not really asking you to give them the benefit of the doubt. At this point, they're already capable of building nuclear power plants, and I would exp...

Re: Mohsen Fakhrizadeh Assassination and other Middle Eastern developments

Might also be good to remember that the Iran nuclear program also involves them developing their nuclear power plants. Wether nuclear weapons is a byproduct or the primary reason for the program, feel free to speculate. But they're not gonna back down from the program unless they're compensated for ...

Re: US authoritarianism

I do agree that the plan was nonsense. Probability of succeeding with is was zero.

The reason why this undermines democracy is that a large group of republican voters now believe that violating election laws is necessary to preserve the integrity of the vote.
