Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

In what sense are you defining it as a war, out of interest?

Re: Freedom!

Ah, bit of a cock-up on the public relations front. That's a tad unfortunate.

Re: Freedom!

You'll be old enough to remember thalidomide too, then. And from what I recall the whooping cough vaccine of the 70s/80s had an unfortunate reputation for neurological complications, which is why that formulation is no longer in use. These are not, and never have been, black and white issues.

Re: Freedom!

What is undeniable, be it in Australia or elsewhere and regardless of how well Covid-19 has been handled, is that some of the Covid-19 measures brought in have not only been utterly unnecessary, but in some cases actively harmful. https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/rescue-dogs-shot-dead-by-nsw-coun...

I always felt you were better suited to the cream cheese bagel, angry jogger, and chiwawas in a sling fraternity ;) What about angry walker?? And I don't even own a dog, you insensitive clod! Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

Seventy Thousand Deaths The Afghan army was only around 200,000 strong. If any force takes those kind of losses it will struggle to hold. As Tugendhat said in his excellent speech I posted here on Wednesday: "Those who have never fought for the colours they fly should be careful about criticising th...

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

Ora, 70,000 Afghan military servicemen have died fighting the Taliban. Let's not rubbish their sacrifice with bloody stupid comments dismissing them as glorified mercs I see you haven't bothered addressing any of the points raised. But nice try. You first point was that the Afghan military acted li...

Re: Freedom!

The Australian strategy has largely been a success. The only obvious drawback being an initially slow vaccination rate which, considering that vaccination is the only way back to normality, is a little baffling. Still, they now seem fairly well on their way to getting to the level of vaccination req...

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

Ora, a reporter saying she's "heard" something is not evidence. And the idea that you let the lunatic murderer society win because some government officials are a bit corrupt is a tad bizarre in itself.

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

I think that you'd benefit hugely from giving twitter a miss for a while, ora. You're reading a hell of a lot of weird shit there. Yes, totalitarian dictatorships that rule with an iron first can be quite stable, especially when combined with religious extremism. Other exciting examples of stability...

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

Ah, my apologies. I'd taken your argument to be that the war was far less costly for America than the headline figure suggests because much of the money stays in American hands. I was clearly giving it weight that was unwarranted. I shall endeavour to avoid doing so in future :-)
