Re: Communicating with draw & cancel button in gunboat

I couldn't find that in the site rules - please could you point me to it? There is a similar rule about Pause and Cancel buttons, though. In practice, I think that rule on draw votes is unenforceable and pretty odd - if someone is allowed to communicate "I want this game to draw", it's weird that th...

Re: seeking players for gunboat with EOG discussion so we can improve

With apologies for lateness, my EOG thoughts on Game 4 . I was Italy, and overall I never made much progress, hanging around for a while but failing to expand beyond the obvious 4 centres at any point. This can happen to Italy; it has great flexibility, but the other side of that can is that if you ...

Re: Soloing as Italy

No. Those are not on the same level. Your belief that Kie-Den is automatic is a belief; that belief is not shared by many Diplomacy players, including but not limited to me. Con-Bul is the most automatic move in the game. In my opinion, it goes: 1. Con-Bul. There is no valid alternative. 2. StP-GoB...

Re: If you could change one thing...

I would try to fix the problem with Turkey. ... How about splitting Bulgaria in two? The main challenge there is that only one can be a supply centre.. So we'd have Bulgaria (supply centre), bordering Rumania, Serbia, Constantinople, Black Sea and Macedonia. We add Macedonia (no sc), bordering Serb...

Re: If you could change one thing...

I would try to fix the problem with Turkey. Turkey is too easily defended once it reaches 5-6 centres. Since neither Austria or Italy can solo without conquering Turkey, this means that they should usually not ally with Turkey if they want to solo (especially Austria, who will have no fleets in such...

Very cool! I'd be interested in the corresponding gunboat stats (which I don't think are part of RJ's analysis?)

I have made the +1 counts in this thread members of the Fibonacci sequence, where possible. I encourage others to do the same.

Re: How often do games draw?

The distinction between press and gunboat is important here. In press, the risk to whittling is much higher; because the potential whittlee can demand that the whittlers only commit an absolute minimum force to hold the stalemate line in the least threatening possible way. In gunboat, it is often ha...

Re: Gunboat Stats

Indeed. My initial thought was that Germany was gunning for Burgundy, but that's so much worse than Holland that it can't be right.

I guess this opening makes sense in a meta where France would sometimes go for Ruhr in Autumn? It discourages that move. Otherwise I can't make much sense of it.

Re: Gunboat Stats

Very nice. I've already found several surprises in the opening stats, which I need to think about. Perhaps the most notable are the success of Russias who move to Finland (maybe they get Sweden more?) and the anti-French DEN, MUN, RUH opening for Germany (though this seems to have died out). A quibb...

Re: Favourite country and why?

In full press, I find the Eastern powers more interesting than the Western ones (at least early on... later on anything can happen). The Western Triangle is usually pretty much a game of 'odd one out' - two powers gang up on the third, and you want to avoid being the third. Whereas in the East, you ...

Re: How often do games draw?

Yes - my statistics above were for press, but the same trends hold for gunboat: PPSC (unfiltered): 69% solo DSS (unfiltered): 44% PPSC (101+): 75% - but extremely small sample of 67 games. DSS (101+): 32%. One additional note: in press, the PPSC solo rate was initially much higher; splitting the gam...

Re: How often do games draw?

I was curious about this, and it looks like it is no longer true that most games are solos. I did searches like this one to check how many wins and draws there are in DSS and PPSC, both in general and with bet size 101+ (which is one easy way to get some kind of quality bar - though I don't know how...

Re: All Diplomacy Scoring Stinks

I think that the quality of play is far higher on webDip than other websites I have dabbled in. I think the main reason is all the metrics we use to track results. Do you think that these metrics make players better, or allow you to only play with better players? Or rather - they obviously do the l...

Re: Fairbot Belt challenge

I had been using the strategy I employed in the first game rather consistently - the turn to STP was the new thing. I definitely made some mistakes after that; particularly, I think I should have taken MUN in Spring 1903, getting me a build. I also think my fleet should have gone via Denmark, which...
