Not that it matters in any way whatsoever, but Teccles what site do you call home?
Er... WebDiplomacy. Though I did play one face-to-face game when I was 10. The *only* thing I remember about it is being called "a lamb to the slaughter", which may also be an apt description in this final.

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

To clarify the scoring system for the final - is it one board, sum of squares (aka board leader wins)?

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

I'm going to take this as confirmation enough of the placements. Congrats to all the other finalists and very excited for this last game! I love that most of you I've never had a chance to play with and from what I've seen so far this is looking like an incredibly impressive and interesting line up...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

As somewhat OCD about these sorts of things and an accountant by profession you numbers both being "essentially" but not actual the same as mine fill with a cold sense of dread. A mystery I must unravel. If not too onerous if you could let me know where the differences are via PM so I can investiga...

Re: Two Tier Scoring

Jay: Thanks for the explanation on the rationale for top scores, that makes perfect sense. I wonder whether, in practise, you don't need to worry so much about people draw-whittling. For example, your 7 centre top score is based on a rather absurd scenario, where a board leader on 7 centres has the ...

Re: Two Tier Scoring

Jay: apologies if I’ve missed this, but could you spell out a little more why your top scores are what they are? I do think one reason your system feels complicated is that these values don’t have an obvious explanation.

Re: Two Tier Scoring

I don't have time to reply to everything here (I will eventually), but I'm honestly confused why people think my system is complicated to compute. Maybe it is just my mathematician brain? I wrote up the scoring math so that one formula would cover ties as well as sole board leadership. But when the...

Re: Petition: Save the eternal stalemate!

You could do it if build phases were slightly less common: Spring: A takes B’s last two SCs Autumn: B dislodges one of A’s units, which disbands. Autumn 2: B dislodges the other of A’s units, which disbands. Winter: B has no SCs, so disbands their two units. A has no home SCs, and no units. But I ca...

Re: Diplomacy Games are Like Onions, Layer 1: Politics

Thanks, excellent as always! As a newish player, strategy is certainly the element of the game I've found hardest to develop, because so much is experience. To your advice of "Gain Personal Experience" and "Gain Vicarious Experience", I'd add "Gain Gunboat Experience". Some of the strategic parts of...

Bots and people game

I'd like to play a game with a mixture of bots and people. That game is https://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=249480. I'm looking for two human players - we'll then leave it to start in 1 day's time with 4 bots. PM me for the password, first come first served. 1 day phases, HDV, unranked, anon (...

Thanks Squigs for running these!

I had initially been planning to go maximally conservative, with one big bet; but both Ankara and Ukraine seemed to have plenty of momentum. I'm a little bit surprised at how well most these riots were coordinated.

Re: Ashes Test Cricket

The logic is that a batsman is more likely to get out in the first part of their innings than later, because they get used to the bowling/conditions/something. I'm pretty sure that's true from patterns of scoring. So if you send Root in, he has to get used to the conditions twice - once at night and...
