Re: Annual Religious Thread

A moral code based on being nice to people and generally leaving people alone to live as they please if they are causing no harm (or which seeks to limit aggregate harm in cases where it is impossible to achieve zero harm) is surely better than obeying the instructions of a non-existent sky wizard....

Re: Annual Religious Thread

This is such utter garbage. Sorry but historically the religious justification for moral actions was 'listen to US because we have the authority of God backing us' an appeal to authority. It wasn't encouraging anyone to think deeply about the topic. God as an answer to any question (like why the th...

Re: Annual Religious Thread

People who support their trans friends are not demanding unrestricted surgery upon children. Way to blast a fake dog-whistle. Religious morality used to be "kill all the gays". And you think that was better? But they absolutely are trying to shut down all discussion on it. The big example from earl...

Re: Annual Religious Thread

I appreciate the insight. I think it's also somewhat clear that the economic pressure, climate change dread, and internet access to every problem/corruption/oppression on the planet is also ramping up the zealotry on all sides as things keep getting worse. I'm sort of expecting another event simila...

Re: Annual Religious Thread

I think I made a couple over the years, but probably good to start fresh. We all develop and grow every year so I suspect we've evolved our beliefs since previous threads too. One thing I've recently discovered is how quickly the New Atheist movement died out. Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens,...

Re: Climate cowardice

'become productive members of society' assumes so much, like how is our society going to manage the current ai revolution (it has been a hell of a 11 months, never mind what your kids will face in the nect 2 decades). You are thinking with a scarcity mindset. As we become more productive, new jobs ...

Climate scientists have an anti-growth problem: https://rogerpielkejr.substack.com/p/do ... ve-an-anti Climate scientists believe far less in "green growth" than the general population, especially the social science ones. More climate scientists believe in "degrowth" than in "green growth". This is ...

Re: Climate cowardice

I see stories like this as an incredibly tiny taste of the truly massive economic pain we will need to inflict on ourselves to get anywhere near climate targets in such a short period of time:

Re: Climate cowardice

If you look at recent historic events commonly described as a crisis, such as the Covid pandemic, the 2008 financial crisis, the Syrian civil war, the Haiti earthquake, the Indian Ocean tsunami, then it wouldn't be out of place to consider climate change an issue of comparable magnitude. It is quit...

Re: Climate cowardice

Sorry, then please would you clarify: What immediate actions are you proposing? I have been a fan of a slowly increasing carbon tax for years with revenue given back through tax cuts/subsidies for the lowest income earners. This provides the right incentives to get people off fossil fuels and is te...

Re: Climate cowardice

It isn't only the belief that the world will end unless immediate and radical action is taken. It is also the belief that the only reason we are being held back from taking these actions is because of an evil cabal of vested interests in the status quo. This group of evil greedy multi-millionaires/b...

Re: Climate cowardice

I like the way that this debate presents me as the extremist because I would like to *prevent* millions of deaths. You are the extremist here by not recognizing the costs of what you are proposing. You propose killing millions of people (by prematurely trying to stop the use of fossil fuels before ...

Re: Climate cowardice

Even worse how? This is an emergency. You don't think extreme poverty and starvation (especially in developing nations) caused by the removal of fossil fuels would be a big deal? You don't solve an emergency by creating a different one. Failing to tackle the climate crisis will render large parts o...

Re: Climate cowardice

If I am reading this correctly the world is not even remotely going to hit the fanciful 45% drop in emissions that is claimed is required to limit to 1.5C. If anything CO2 emissions worldwide in 2030 may be still higher than 2010 levels. "The latest update shows that for all available NDCs of all 19...

Re: Climate cowardice

Then millions of people are going to die, and many millions more will suffer. That's good isn't it. You do realize that this is a cost-benefit discussion, don't you? That the costs to humanity can be even worse if we arbitrarily try and ban fossil fuels before the tech is available to replace them?...
