That's funny, I've always found strawberry-rhubarb to be sickly sweet. I think grocery stores and home cooks tend to go overboard with the sugar and strawberries, in an attempt to tame the tartness of the rhubarb.
...gotta avoid that strawberry pie goo they sell at the stores.

Re: Rhubarb Pie

Truth be told I don't mind rhubarb. The trouble is that rhubarb plants make far more rhubarb than you could possibly want. Crumble is far inferior to pie, and rhubarb pie is far inferior to apple and blackberry pie (which is the king of desert pies). But a stick of rhubarb dunked in sugar is pleasa...

Re: Rhubarb Pie

Bay leaf kind of reminds me of nutmeg. Your version of vanilla sounds yummy (: Also, I forgot to acknowledge that berries are a fine addition that I forgot about. Yeah, I'd encourage you to try infusing your milk/cream with flavour, since you can do just about anything. Earl Grey is another choice ...

Re: Rhubarb Pie

 I would never besmirch the purity of a good custard with anything other than possibly rice. Berries, of course. Wife and I raise chickens so plenty of fresh eggs and custard is one of my favorite "easy to make" desserts. I have not yet attempted the creme brulee sugar top yet, though, ...

Re: Rhubarb Pie

It's the only vegetable I eat with custard. You don't put custard on your broccoli? Man you Americans are weird. I would never besmirch the purity of a good custard with anything other than possibly rice. Berries, of course. My FIL has a gluten allergy, so my MIL has spent years developing her GF recipes. Her rhubarb pie is to die for, and even superior to any normal pie I have ever had.

Does anyone here taint their rhubarb pies with strawberries?
Yes, we've had it as strawberry/rhubarb too.

Re: Rhubarb Pie

In the UK we tend to have rhubarb crumble, which has a buttery crumb topping instead of a pie lid, but the filling is pretty much the same. It goes well with custard or ice cream. My wife makes rhubarb crumbles, too. :) And we eat both the pie and crumble with vanilla ice cream as well, although no...

Rhubarb Pie

Is it a thing where you live? If so, what do you think of it? (Especially those of you on the other side of the big pond - I've watched a lot of GBBO and tastes seem different when it comes to fruit pies such that I'm really curious). We have a small patch of Rhubarb in our yard and my wife made a s...

Re: Twenty Questions - Game 109

The correct answer is Louis L'Amour, "America's storyteller". He was an extremely prolific author of Frontier stories (also known as Westerns), and completely dominated the genre. Personally, I think his (non-western) short stories are absolute dynamite, particularly since they relate to his real-l...

Best known for being a writer or philosopher? In fact, yes, 'rediscovered' through his multi-volume De architectura. My wife did her PhD in Renaissance architecture. Free guess: Vitruvius? Damn, why was it so simple??? Vitruvius it is. Funny, I don't *think* (it was late) the list of Writers and Ph...

Re: Twenty Questions - Game 109

He wasn't a politican, but he did do a lot of politically charged stuff (so I'm not sure about that)... he did "serve" (work) as part of the U.S. Army... and he was born at the right time and never won a Pulitzer...

...so I'm gonna guess Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.

Sweet... not asking an official question... just starting a conversation for us to get to know each other... really, no ulterior motive... one of my favorite authors is C.J. Cherrryh... who are your top ten authors? Is this flirting? Tolkien, Pratchett, Adams, Cornwell, Campbell, Orwell, Stephenson...

Re: Twenty Qs #106 : Take Two

I had never heard of him, I found him on Wikipedia, LOL 107 coming up shortly I was surprised no one asked if the character had a wikipedia page. Did you read about the origin of the name? Here's a link to one of my favorite songs on the soundtrack (this is from the 2009 remake): https://www.youtub...
