Re: Daffy Old MM & Local Council Election

Why would you be against compulsory voting? What is so bad about it? From a point of principle, a vote is a hard won freedom that is greatly prized and seen as a duty proudly carried out my many. To reduce such a treasure to an obligation imposed by political masters is tragic. From a more practica...

Re: Daffy Old MM & Local Council Election

I know that low turnout for elections is bad for democracy. The poster child for this is the USA. Due to the low turnout, elections in the US aren't about convincing people to change their mind to vote for you. Elections are all about getting your supporters to turn out and discouraging your oppone...

Re: Are female superhero movies unpopular because…

Anyway, isn't this thread suppose to be female superheros? I really like the res evil movies. They're kinda bad, but good fun, lots of women shooting things. Main character has powers, so I'd say it counts. They were pretty popular Yeah, a bit of fun mindless escapism. You can make an argument abou...

Re: Are female superhero movies unpopular because…

This might shock you but women have actually been around men, and even have a decent idea of what they're like when we aren't around Honestly, I'm increasingly of the opinion that you haven't the foggiest idea what men are like when you're not around, and seem to be basing your view on a collection...

Re: Are female superhero movies unpopular because…

White dudes are always individuals- everyone else never is. Interesting if true, but it isn't. Gender disappoint- most well known as a dad annoyed that he's getting another daughter instead of a son in every hackey sitcom. Is having it reversed, just once, where a mom is annoyed she's getting a son...

Re: Daffy Old MM & Local Council Election

I don't have time to explain the virtues of compulsory voting Antipodean style, the fundamental point is, we don't like shirkers when it comes to participation in our Democracy that Australians have created, shaped and defended. If you want to.live hete and enjoy it's benefits you participate I ful...

Re: Who bombed the Nordstream Pipeline?

This was the South West Energy & Environment Group, around 15 years ago. They put in a lot of work into carbon equivalent footprints of various methods of energy production, taking a holistic view including embedded carbon, losses in transport, the actual burning of the stuff etc etc. Hydroelectric ...

Indeed so. The timing of the Nordstream incident coinciding with the opening of the Baltic Pipe is unlikely to be a coincidence.

Re: Who bombed the Nordstream Pipeline?

Aside, environmentally this is a disaster, how much natural gas was in the pipes even while off? Possibly the highest peak of methane in history. Possibly the largest single event, but in the grand scheme of things I doubt it's particularly significant. The dirty secret of the gas industry is that ...

Re: Who bombed the Nordstream Pipeline?

Well, that rules out the Yanks. If they wanted to do it and didn't care who knows they would have just done it and said it was them, and if they wanted to do it secretly they wouldn't have had their President mention the possibility before hand. It could be Russia. They have been playing with the Eu...

Re: Daffy Old MM & Local Council Election

Alas, compulsory voting is a red line issue for me. I am unable to lend my vote to anyone in favour of it. I fear you have to deduct my vote from your tally. (I forget how the Australian system works, but I have a notion that British votes count for 10... or at least some number with a zero in it)

Re: 20 Questions - Game 58

The contrary view would suggest that a book about the 1970 World Cup Final is not a book about Brazilian international footballers. This would be an absurd attitude. It depends on your point of view, I guess. Is Jaws a film about a shark, or a film about something else that happens to have a shark ...

Re: Are female superhero movies unpopular because…

I struggle with Rings Of Power because one of the Hobbits is Lenny Henry, and it's impossible for any Brit to watch it without thinking "that's Lenny Henry attempting some kind of Irish accent..." and it takes you right out of the universe. In terms of it being boring, I suggest you reread The Counc...
