Re: Roe v. Wade SCOTUS Opinion leak confirmed
Abortion was declared lawful in Northern Ireland in 2019. Most people in Northern Ireland needing an abortion still travel to another part of the UK to have it, but this travel is fully funded by the state. That's it. In 2018, when the Republic finally repealed the 8th amendment (an excellent step ...

Re: Roe v. Wade SCOTUS Opinion leak confirmed
Opinion: Adoption is not a 'good' alternative I am the “innocent child” pro-lifers love to slap on posters/use to bolster arguments. My mother gave me up for adoption after being unable to access abortion. She was poor, homeless. There was no parenting help. I received a life of pain+abuse. I would’...

Re: Roe v. Wade SCOTUS Opinion leak confirmed
I may be misremembering, Northern Ireland technically today has no abortions despite them being legal now, because the implementation of the law which was forced through in the last year or two has not happened, because nobody can agree on who pays for the NHS services, or some such mess.

Re: Roe v. Wade SCOTUS Opinion leak confirmed
". All they really did was hand the decision back to the states." Which makes abortion illegal. That the media misses this nuance isn't really much of a problem. Technically it doesn't do what you're describing in all instances and only does so if the state in question passed a law to do so. My iss...

Re: Southern Boarder
The UN has a position on self-determination, but what is harder is deciding who the 'self' is. Like Ireland (the island) had no particular history as a unified and self-governing political entity, but it did have a language and culture... So when it came to independence the decision to arbitrarily d...

Re: Roe v. Wade SCOTUS Opinion leak confirmed
I think we can overstate the importance of this decision. This doesn't ban abortion in any way shape or form. All it does is not stop states from banning abortion. I'm pretty sure that actually, No. Several states already have laws on the books which ban abortions, but only on condition that Roe be...

Re: Your worldview is cancer
6 years ago? That seems rather recent. When did i last play diplomacy? I would like to Mitchell up on his discussion, If a nation state wants the highest GDP per capita then having the best educated, healthiest population is a fundamental requirement. The issue i take isn't with the hypothetical eco...

Re: More American children murdered by gun-toting lunatic
Yeah, I believe a buyback is possible and some would do it, but an issue though is the government never pays market value for anything they take. Look at how they handle Eminent Domain for an example of unfair bullshit... At least we are talking about potential practical solutions. It doesn't matte...

Re: More American children murdered by gun-toting lunatic
The threat of American violence has been overwhelmingly a force for good over the last century, barring a few well publicised errors. They nukes two cities. Those we're not military targets and thus are clear examples of war crimes. Nobody held them to account (because they won) and this is just th...

Re: More American children murdered by gun-toting lunatic
To take a comparable US example, after slavery was abolished, compensation was paid to former slave owners for their loss of property. Right? The point being, people may not like the change which is happening, but political power can bribe them... (I looked it up, because i didn't remember the detai...

Re: More American children murdered by gun-toting lunatic
[When you bring up Waco, you're referring to the Waco Siege or the recent shooting? I assume you mean the Siege - and I'd say that's the best example in present day Yes, and i agree that it is a good example, and though i don't have sympathy for the particulars of the Cult, i do have sympathy for n...

Re: More American children murdered by gun-toting lunatic
The American Public at large, i mean aren't they the problem? Jamie is reducing the issue to a very simple dichotomy, guns or children's lives. But he's not entirely wrong. That said, there is more that can be done to tackle white Supremacy, male entitlement, toxic masculinity and generation of viol...

Re: More American children murdered by gun-toting lunatic
And before you ask - I would happily die to protect my country in the event that it was invaded, like what is happening in Ukraine, and I'd be unwilling to give my guns up if the government came to collect them at my doorstep just because 'guns are bad, some British guy says so'. And before you thi...

Re: More American children murdered by gun-toting lunatic
It has been pointed out that the percentages of mentally ill people world wide are roughly the same, but you don't have mass shootings in this great a number in other countries. So gun regulations do make a difference. First of all, i think it is clear that blaming mental illness is a red herring. ...

Re: More American children murdered by gun-toting lunatic
Of course there are some other good takes: Why is the conversation always about GUNS and never MEN. Women can get guns as easily as men, but they aren't committing mass murders. Why don't we talk about men's inability to control their emotions? Because we, as a society, continue to emphasize men ne...

Re: More American children murdered by gun-toting lunatic
The thing about an amendment is that they do not pass easily. But also, the 2nd amendment does not need to be alltered if it was interpreted as the writers intended (which the current supreme court seems fond of, or at least claims to...) If the phrase 'well regulated militia' was interpreted to req...
