Re: Woke

@Jamie, i believe the origin lies in black communities in the US waking up to the fact of systemic racism and prejudice that continues to this day.

Being woke was later, eh, culturally appropriated by the left/progressives. Afaik.

Re: Arguments for God

There's simply no upside in denying that Gods und Dieties exist and risk on the downside. Are you familiar with Roku's Basilisk argument? It proposes an AI so intelligent that it can simulate you, and can threaten to torture (stimulated) you unless you do everything in your power to help create the...

PS the Basilisk had no interest in simulatd torture of anyone who didn't know about it. But once you read my previous post you are now at risk. PPS this is indeed the AI techbro equivalent of Pascal's wager. You now have the option of dedicating all of your wealth, time and resources to AI research....

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

@Octavious, generally yes, words are defined by usage, but when it comes to people, what you use to describe them, and how the describe themselves is something worth thinking about. Why, though? If the French want to call me Anglais or the Germans an Engländer then what's the problem? I dare say th...

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

Since WW1, the idea of self-determination has been enshrined as a basic tenet of international relations, and the imposition of an unwanted form of government on a foreign country is unacceptable in this day and age. Unless you are Tibetan, Kurdish, any of numerous federal subjects of Russia, Uyghu...

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

Afghani people Firstly, they are Afghans, not Afghani - that is the name of their currency. Second they are Tajiks, Pashtuns, Uzbeks, and a variety of other ethnic groups mostly linked to other countries. Afghanistan is largely a fabrication, drawn on a map by Imperial powers. The country, it seems...

Ora, 70,000 Afghan military servicemen have died fighting the Taliban. Let's not rubbish their sacrifice with bloody stupid comments dismissing them as glorified mercs
I see you haven't bothered addressing any of the points raised. But nice try.

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

Ora, a reporter saying she's "heard" something is not evidence. Oh yeah, first hand accounts reported by journalists, famously not 'evidence'. And the idea that you let the lunatic murderer society win because some government officials are a bit corrupt is a tad bizarre in itself. I have to point t...

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

They are suggesting the Taliban can sign away right to the Lithium (to large foreign firms).

And not 'this is why they left' but more 'since they are leaving, might as well get some Lithium'

Re: After 20 years of fighting the Taliban

23- The Taliban came to power now as part of an international game. This gives a feeling of optimism and pessimism at the same time. It is not a question of whether the Taliban is an Islamic movement or not, but rather about its ability to achieve security and stability. The West is no longer focus...
