Re: Drawing is the new winning?

Or you can make draws DSS worth half the value rounded down. The number of points awarded at the end would be less than the points input. That would be a net-negative scoring system, which doesn't work terribly well in an online environment like this. What could work, if you want the approximate fe...

Re: Drawing is the new winning?

This sad crap has been with the Hobby for decades and won't be going away any time soon. The justifications are just as sorry as they ever were. All you can do is try your damnedest to win, and if that is impossible, throw the game if anyone tries to draw-whittle. Lol It was frankly inevitable as s...

Re: Drawing is the new winning?

Draw-size scoring is a completely different game. The players are very likely to take every turn seriously, no matter the number of SCs they have. Playing for a solo win in a draw-size scoring game is amazing. Every last player, even players lingering on with a single center, fight like their very ...

Re: Drawing is the new winning?

I recommend playing games scored with Sum-of-Squares to avoid that phenomenon. Draw-Sized Scoring creates a conflict of interest whereby players understandably aim for the best possible draw result rather than push for the solo as the strategies benefiting either path differ.

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

Luck plays a non-trivial part of standard diplomacy; if nothing else, there are plenty of times where a situation will boil down to coin flip type attack/defense positions, where it really is basically just RNG who "wins" an action None of that is actually RNG, however. It's certainly coincidence, ...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

I do like the post from nopunin10ded. That's a cracker. The cracks about PPSC are mostly lame imho. I don't know if it's the case for you personally, but most of the folks I've found that enjoy PPSC outside of narrow tournament contexts are using it as a workaround (without necessarily realizing it...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

My own preference is to think of the "luck" in Diplomacy instead as happenstance. The specific circumstances of a given game can indeed be driven by factors mostly (or completely) outside of the players' control. It might be a coincidence (rather than a deliberate strategy), for instance, that your ...

Re: Fibonacci-Diplo: How to Adapt Carnage to Online Play

Some pluses and minuses of Fibonacci / Carnage: As with SOS, draw size isn't a factor, so player elimination has no inherent value. It may still be necessary, and a power's last SCs might be what a given player needs to consume to increase rank, but it doesn't create the problem whereby achieving a ...

Fibonacci-Diplo: How to Adapt Carnage to Online Play

Hiyo, I'm not a webDiplomacy regular, but some of you may have encountered me on PlayDip, the vDip forums, Reddit, or Discord. I'm NoPunIn10Did, and I'm a forum moderator over at PlayDiplomacy. I also do quite a bit of variant development and GM-ing. One of the projects I've undertaken in the past w...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

Is there any reason Carnage scoring wouldn't work in webdip? Funny you should ask: https://www.playdiplomacy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=57975 Short answer is Yes, it can work, but with modifications. Standard Carnage doesn’t scale well with variants, and it’s not great when used in this sort of ...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

All webDip draws include all survivors. What I was getting at is that it's better to be eliminated and have the game end in a draw without you than it is to allow a solo in Carnage, which is weird. Gotcha. It is a little strange, but it's in line with one goal of Carnage's designer: that the solo s...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

There was significant evidence of positive correlation between the hypothetical SOS score and the game ending in a solo. I tried two different regressions for this value, and the p-values were 7.23e-11 and 0.00692 for regressions with nonzero or zero intercepts, respectively. In layman's terms, thi...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

Amateur Statistician Moment For the sake of argument, I took a sample of 179 games of classic that I'd previously collected from PlayDip. Not a huge sample, but enough to run a primary experiment. These games were full-press, no variants, et cetera. Keep in mind that all rated games on PlayDip curr...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

Carnage also encourages allowing a draw to happen without oneself over throwing a solo. In Carnage, draws must include all survivors. That's the case for SOS too, though I'm less familiar with specifically how your site implements it. Do you allow people to vote themselves out of a draw in an SOS g...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

I think you're the one conflating things now. There's a difference between incentivising elimination (which we both agree DSS does) and neither incentivising nor de-incentivising elimination. SoS actively de-incentivises eliminating other powers. A neutral system does not inherently incentivise eli...
