Re: The Carebear Conundrum

It seems like the best strategy for dealing with carebears is to:
1. Identify them
2. Pretend to be one and form a "carebear alliance"
3. Stab them at the end for the win.

Why can't that work?

Re: How to break a stalemate line

I think you had a chance to solo. If Western Med was supporting Spain, there is nothing you could do to take it, but since Spain only had 1 support, I would have taken it from Mar, giving up Mar temporarily. That would force-disband a French fleet from Spain. Then you could take back Mar from Spain ...

The dislodged unit can't support the move, so the armies would bounce in Bulgaria.

Re: seeking players for gunboat with EOG discussion so we can improve

Just a suggestion here. It might be useful to keep some notes (even a journal) throughout the game so that by the time we get to the end we actually remember what we were thinking earlier. At least I'll need to do that.

Re: Gunboat Stats

Great stats! A few things I found, though I'm not sure if all of these numbers are statistically significant? In PPSC games (all prior to 2017), Turkey was the best power (.23 avg share) In 2017-2018, France and Turkey were about tied for the best (.19) with Germany 3rd (.16) In the last 2 years, Fr...

Thank you for this article. I've been close to posting a question about Turkey's diplomatic options. It seems to me too often his three neighbors are just trying to knock him out early.

Re: Variant rules game for players who like co-operation

I just found this thread recently. I wonder how did the game go? Is there any interest in trying a similar one? I'm thinking of some variation to the previous one: 1. Play on a 10-player map (Modern Europe or America) with 5 teams 2. Each player knows who their teammate is but the teams are otherwis...

Re: Bots don't seem to ever want to stop a solo and get a draw

Any plans to retrain the bots with the latest game data? There has to be a lot of bot games where players soloed against them that could help them up their game a notch.

Re: All Diplomacy Scoring Stinks

I also had some criticism of the original article. It might be related to RJ's but probably coming from a different angle. Maybe I don't really understand how you could separate utility points that motivate in-game goals and skill points that guage relative ability of players in Diplomacy. Assuming ...

Now, that is clear a loss for the junior partner. Quite an embarrassing loss as well - he didn't even realize he was loosing! It's like a soccer team deliberately scoring own goals.
On the other hand, that is impressive diplomacy play for the senior partner to talk him into that.

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

Would it be correct to interpret the solution for puzzle 3, "probability 1" as you are looking for some strategy by France that should allow him to win eventually? So Austria would have to continually guess right to perpetuity to stop it?

Re: Two Tier Scoring

I mainly just think there should be a more moderate scoring system between the two extremes we have today. On the one side DSS gives the same points to all draw participants. Number of centers completely doesn't matter. On the other extreme, SoS rewards large powers and penalizes small powers. In ma...

Re: Two Tier Scoring

Puscherbilbo's idea should be fairly easy for the masses to grasp and not too different from what I was proposing. But I think SoS can be at times hard to predict (without a calculator) how centers changing hands are going to affect the score, so PPSC would be better. In my opinion an 11-center powe...

Re: Two Tier Scoring

I think I would like this system as an improvement over the current options. One thing I'm not sure about is if you should disincentivize whittling down the draw so much as to allow the top player the same score regardless of draw size. After crunching some numbers I think my own preferred system mi...

Thanks for your contribution to online Diplomacy training. I found your use of convoys in the early game interesting. I think I ...
