Re: Communicating with draw & cancel button in gunboat

You are incorrectly identifying what is problematic about your example; it's not the use of the draw vote but the intentional and prior arrangement of several players outside of game to collaborate. It would be equally problematic were you to make this agreement with several others that a particula...

Re: Communicating with draw & cancel button in gunboat

That's about as ridiculous a thing as I've ever seen a mod post. Re-read what you just typed. If people don't want it to be used as a tool - then they'll make HDV games. So, in your view it would be fine for me to use the draw button to communicate a full press message in morse code? Would it also...

Re: Winning as Russia in Gunboat

The strategy that anlari is describing, though, doesn't really do any of these things. It's aiming for a large draw, and it's doing so by trying to prematurely collapse Germany in the hopes that people will be nice and just end the game quickly and let you grovel your way into a piece of a 5-way coa...

Re: Winning as Russia in Gunboat

I disagree pretty much on all counts. First off, if you don't play for a win in gunboat, you won't win in gunboat. The goal with Russia, or any other power, should be to maximize your chances at 18. And second, your analysis doesn't hold up because Russia's basically the worst power to play for a st...

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge

Yonni - ELO rankings would be far more meaningful in Diplomacy and the guts of my complaint. ... Converting to ELO would be a step in the right direction to fixing it. As I tried to explain a bit better in my earlier post (I won't repeat it here since it appears above but am happy to engage in a di...

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge

What you're describing is valid, and is an artifact of two flaws in the GR system. First, the math behind the system makes a specific, but incorrect assumption about what the skill curve looks like in Diplomacy. For example, in chess, if a 1700 plays against a 1600, the results should look the same ...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

I typically try to use agreements like this in the opposite way. I want to maximize my chances of the solo, because that's really all I'm playing for. So when there's a third, small power in what would otherwise be a two-way draw, then if it's a realistic option, I make them an offer they can't refu...

Re: Gunboat Strategy: England

I think the broader point here comes down to understanding where the many stalemate lines are on the map and how they will affect endgame play. For example, if you want to know whether to prioritize Munich, Tunis, or Norway in that position, the starting point for analysis is asking yourself which o...

Re: Gunboat Strategy: England

Austria and Germany can prevent this, with Germany cutting the support of Baltic Sea. Germany's best effort to stay in the game is fighting for Berlin anyay. Even if England takes Berlin with Baltic Sea Austria can then retake Berlin with the help of Germany (Baltic Sea attacks Kiel). Yes, Germany ...

Re: Gunboat Strategy: England

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=217400 1) I would not have won this game unless Germany did not just give up in the Scandanavian Peninsula near the end of the game. I would not have been able to set up the stalemate quick up in the German homeland to defend against an Austrian invasion. Th...

Re: Gunboat Strategy: England

I don't really post here frequently, so I'll try to keep this short and summarize, letting others carry the discussion. For what it's worth, I think all of these posts have missed the major challenge with England. The goal of playing Diplomacy is to reach 18 centers. Your job in gunboat is, at all t...
