Re: Should white people own Chinese restaurants?

Haha, you guys are funny and so white. If the question is, "should there be legal barriers to white people owning Chinese restaurants?" I think we're all in agreement that the answer is no. But if the question is, "should there be social barriers to white people owning Chinese restaurants?" I think ...

Re: The USA's trade deficits

I think there's a pretty big problem of economic illiteracy amongst the general US population and also the media and politicians who are supposed to inform them. To some degree, that's to be expected, because economic theory is difficult for a lot of laypeople to understand. On the other hand, there...

Re: The Shapiro Meltdown

I watched the interview, and I must say that it's a bit unfair to bring up statements from 7+ years ago and ask him to defend them on the spot. Shapiro has been writing since he was seventeen and I think it's too much to ask him to remember every single thing he's ever written. You can tell that Sha...

Re: NHS, Britain’s National Heath Service

A couple of years ago, I went on a trip with a friend after graduation. We met an American couple on a train, and we eventually got to talking about health care (we're Canadian). The woman had lupus and required constant treatment and doctor visits. She told us that it was very difficult for her to ...

Re: Trade War _good_

There are other ways to deal with "being taken advantage of" than unilaterally slapping on tariffs. Why not make use of the WTO Dispute Settlement Board or any of the dispute resolution mechanisms within the various trade agreements? That's what they're there for anyway.

Re: America kinda sucks

One thing that always bothers me when I visit the States is the massive portion sizes at all the restaurants. On a recent trip to DC, I was unable to finish a single meal I had ordered, including one off the kids' menu. I have no idea how you Americans are able to finish that much food. Only one of ...

The Do-Nothing Discipline

Since these thinkers are fond of calling their fetishized, quantified variables “fundamentals,” let’s call them “fundamentalists.” We might as well because, for all their statistical sophistication, their accounts of human motivation are so narrow as to bring to mind the dogmatic conviction that di...

Re: USA starts a trade war with allies

I would love to. The EU imposes a 10% tariff on US cars, while we only impose a 2.5% tariff on their cars. How, then, can they claim that it's unfair for us to increase our tariffs in other areas? I had a great time double checking all of this. Fun fact: the HS Code for cars is 8703 (the chapter an...

Re: USA starts a trade war with allies

Trade law is shaping up to be a fascinating area, for all you aspiring lawyers out there. As I understand it, Trump is relying on Article XXI of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) to justify the new tariffs. Interestingly, I haven't found any examples of this Article being used since ...
