Tex-exit has picked up some steam again now that Biden is President of the USA. California and Texas independence movements rotate based on who is occupying the White House.

In some rural counties are pushing for secession from thier more liberal state governments to join more conservative boarder states. I've read recently of a county in Oregon wanting to be part of Idaho, and a Colorado county trying to join Wyoming.
Like Jefferson in California, which is just plain stupid as the tax base needs the bay area as it includes some of California's poorest counties. It would likely be on of the poorest states if ever realized.

That does indeed sound like the sort of nonsense you would suppose, yes.

I suppose English shouldn't be mandatory either.

Toll-din ;)

Ireland will always be welcome to reunite with the rest of the United Kingdom. All they need do is ask. We are all one group of islands after all.

As far as the revival of fringe languages go, I am fully in favour of helping those who are enthusiastic about such things. Imposing it on the poor school kids of those areas seems unnecessarily cruel, though, and should be avoided.
Isn't it a common function of school to impose certain cultural beliefs/ideologies/religions/knowledge on the poor students whether they like it or not?

I still find this funny though:

I know one Union you can rejoin :)
Right now I'm not even sure if they would let us back in.
I'm inclined to agree. Certainly not on terms we'd accept. If the EU starts to splinter it's feasible we might join a looser organisation that evolves from it, but that's about it.

I think irish reunification and Scottish Independence will propel the issue in Wales forward. Don't know if it will be another 20 years before it is taken seriously, or if England will decide to leave/end the UK first...

That said, Welsh, Cornish and Breton are all part of one language family, and I would love to see their revival and success.

Not really an independence movement but a significant portion of the population of Northern Ireland/The north of Ireland want to join the south of Ireland.

My sense is that there could well be a border poll in the next decade.

And don’t forget Wales. Much more unlikely that anything will change, but you never know.

Don't forget the good people of Mercia. I recently made a short film on their campaign for independence!

Londoners will be properly pissed off if a handful of Brummie hippies march up to them and demand the city back for the greater glory of Mercia .

The good people of Mercia will have their arses handed to them by the more competent people of Wessex, Wales, and the North. Some things are eternal.

The Corsicans, the bretons, the basques,
the catalans, and the isle of mans,
Cape Bretoners and Newfoundlanders,
Palestinians, and who else?
the Quebecois, the icelanders - succesful, the greenlanders, not yet successful
The Scottish and their friends on the Orkney and Shetland islands.
All have some kind of beef with the Peace of Westphalia.

In particular, I like the karen ethnic group in Myanmar - they have been fighting the world's longest insurgency, since 1946, with the hope of becoming a nation state.

That was a nice little film. The proponents are logical, even in their powerlessness.

Because, Ora, over a third of a million Brits claimed their religion to Jedi in the census a few years back. People in Britain sign all sorts of things that they don't actually believe. I've been a member of the flat earth society since the late 90s. You can't draw conclusions from it.

Hey, I didn't say they were viable. But then most third parties in the First past the post system you've got tend to fair poorly due to tactical voting.

My point is merely, if real people try to run a real political party (or a few parties, apparently the Yorkshire party also exists) why would you not believe that 50 thousand of so would prefer to be a significant part of Scotland rather than a largely ignored part of England (or so one can presume they feel, based on the existance of these minor parties...)

Re: Independence Movements

by Octavious » Mon Feb 17, 2020 12:24 pm

Yes, Ora. And did you see how many votes they won? It's fewer than you'd expect if only the friends and family of the party officials and candidates voted :p.

50,000 people signed that petition, that level of support wouldn't surprise me (it is like a % of people in Cornwall who want Cornish independence). You may consider their chances of success a joke.

That petition isn't the only one, there is also a (at least one) political party:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Party
