Is another shutdown going to happen soon?
The massive spending bill averted another shutdown for now. However all the underlying problems remain for another one later in the year over the next spending bill.

The monarchy's contribution to British diplomatic clout and the military are huge, as is the stabilising role they have with the institutions of British democracy. And it all gets paid for several times over by tourism. As systems go, it's pretty awesome.

Also, when Her Maj finally chokes on a fish bone and is Queen no more, we all get a day off for the funeral followed by another day off for the coronation :-D .

But mostly the first paragraph....

The monarchy contributes more to the British budget than the pittance they get from tax.

The Monarchy is just a celebrity seat bruh... they hold no power
they still extract wealth from the citizenry via taxes and don't do anything in return. but yeah no power to make laws.

Are you American, ND? You sort of look like you're plugging for the Russian plant.
In any event, I'd think essential personnel get paid and keep working, which makes me wonder why the military gets paid in this case?

So ogion, we pay people who do not work with those entitlements. I'm sure you don't object to that. But people the government enlists to serve do not deserve to be paid? You are either a monster or a Russian traitor.

So Rand Paul singlehandedly shut down the US Government by objecting to cloture. This is something I never thought was possible.

Oh it has 60-vote cloture (McConnell and Schumer have already made a deal), it’s just Rand Paul objected to the motion to go to a vote for cloture because he wants floor time to add an amendment.

Republican senator Rand Paul is holding up the Republican budget bill. It doesn't even need the Democrats to block it this time since the Republicans can't even get a simple majority in their controlled Senate.

Actually Al Gore won the election, according to the voters. Too bad they didnt bother to count the votes.

Why are you obsessed with the Queen? It's really quite weird. I live here and I don't give a shit about the royals.

Also in Nixon's case. He lost in his first try. He also lost in his attempt to be governor of California. But due to Johnson's unpopularity, he was able to come back from the dead. He was a master politician. And his own worst enemy.

Nixon was the thing that wouldn't die, except by his own hand. HW like J Adams and T Jefferson were anomalies. HW was essentially Reagan's third term. Successors to dead presidents are also special cases. The ones of note are Mondale, Humphrey, Gore. All modern Vice Presidents who tried to get the office after being VP.
