Great choice and great guess! Eleanor Rigby crossed my mind at least once, but there were so many possibilities I didn't feel comfortable making a guess.

Finally!

We've already eliminated video games, and I think board and card games count as "printed media". It could be a game along the lines of Twenty Questions, but I can't think of one of those that has its own set of characters.

So it's probably a song.
