Correct. Well done.

I had given up a while ago, but usually I vaguely remember hearing the name. This one, no clue.
Perhaps your more familiar with him under his real name - Ghiyath al Din Abu al Fath Umar ibn Ibrahim Nisaburi?
Oh, that guy. Round here we all just used to call him "Persian Dave".

But why would he necessarily have had a doctorate in the modern era?
I'm guessing because of (at least) some of the math he did, which was revolutionary for its time?

He also considered himself to be a student of Avicenna (whom I had actually never heard of). I'll start game 62 later this morning.

Free Guess: Omar Khayyam - a Persian poet, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, but not really an "artist".
Correct. Well done.

Unlucky Szpoti, right era, right geography and right sort of person.

Confusion around the artistic and scientific elements makes me think of an ancient figure. I've used up my free guess, so this one will be counted as the 19th question:

Avicenna?
No

I bet that Avicenna is correct.

Not Laozi [Szpoti]

Elabaration on Dr answer - consider Plato or Archimdes, they did not have doctorates because of the era in which they lived but in the modern era you would expect them to have.

Only four questions left. It could be a Korean, Mongolian, Filipino, Persian, Levantine, Turkic, Mesopotamian, Ainu, Siberian, Southeast Asian or Central Asian man, or a man from the Indonesian archipelago or Arabian peninsula, or maybe an Armenian or Cyproit man depending on how you define Europe.
... or Russian, since they don't consider themselves European.
He included significant parts of Russia when he said "Siberian" and "Central Asian".
