Don't take our comments to heart - it's just competitive spirit. Please stay, Douglas - you're welcome here.
Yes, that's certainly the spirit in which I intended it. Sorry if my chirping was too abrasive.

I'm calling BS on that one.

To call economics a science is misleading at best.

Google "Milton Friedman" "Free to Choose" "New York Times bestseller" and you will see this book was indeed a bestseller.

Well done, Jaguar.

On this occasion I offer my apologies to Hamish since Doug shares his view that economists are scientists.

Guess: Milton Friedman?

The book being 'Free to Choose'
Milton Friedman is correct.

Is it Stephen Hawking?
No because he was a physicist.

As an economist by education, that hurts my feelings!
As a scholar of law and public policy currently doing a PhD based heavily on the econometric effects of legislation, I have great respect for your education. I just wouldn't classify either of us as a scientist. ;)

Could be an economist, psychologist. But I agree, most scientists write books. Maybe the term bestseller is a bit vague. I guess the standard for a fiction bestseller is a lot higher than a scientific bestseller, so if you measure the sales of a scientific book by the standard for fiction.....
Economics is a social science but I don't think most people would regard an economist as a "scientist".

Regarding my last answer. The person wrote some books - most not for the general public. However, one of his books was less technical and did sell half a million copies over a span of time.
Ah, there you go.

Hard to fathom how a scientist who never wrote a popular book could meet the 50% Dart Test. Ideas anyone?

Chemist is one option. Also computer scientist, geologist, environmental scientist and possibly including social sciences.

Did he write at least one book that could be called a bestseller?
No.
