I know. I read the previous messages a few times over to make sure that no one actually guessed him.

Is it Steven Sondheim?

Rodgers and Hammerstein won for South Pacific, and Stephen Sondheim was nominated for Pacific Overtures.
That was the point though, it was an alternative way to narrow it down to those 3 in particular.

Incidentally I almost prefaced my Spector guess with "did he die in 2021?" but I figured the producer question was more likely to yield useful information. Perhaps I was wrong on that count :-)

Is it Steven Sondheim?

So we have two questions left.

Did he win more than one Academy Award?

To be clear, I answered that the person was on that list. No one has yet guessed which one is the correct person. The game is still afoot.

I don't think asking if a person is among a list of names is qualitatively different than asking if he is among a list of winners of a certain award, or even persons of a certain nationality. The group is smaller, but its still a group. If you guess a group too small, you are more likely to get a "No." If you make it too large, you waste questions narrowing down the group.

I can substitute "was he nominated or awarded a Tony for best original score for a musical whose title contains the word Pacific?" but it would have the same intent.

This guess comes very close to covering two people, actually. Rodgers and Hammerstein won for South Pacific, and Stephen Sondheim was nominated for Pacific Overtures.

I guess add a rule like "questions must be characteristics and not batches of names?"

I can substitute "was he nominated or awarded a Tony for best original score for a musical whose title contains the word Pacific?" but it would have the same intent.

I rather like it, to be honest. No harm in casting a wider net, as long as it's treated as a question and not a guess

Rodgers, Hammerstein, Sondheim
I hate this kind of question but can’t think of any rule that excludes it.

Answer is Yes.
I really don't think that question should be allowed.
