The interesting thing here is that they pretty much had to have an irresistable smoking gun. Do you have any idea how much evidence of probable cause you'd have to have to overcome attorney-client privilege issues for the personal attorney of the President? Yikes.

Some several people are in very, very deep trouble.

Trump will be spared impeachment as long as the Republicans control one part of Congress. No matter how much the core Republicans hate him they still want to keep a Republican in power and they don't like Pence that much either.

Trump's done plenty of illegal activity, but he's good at deflecting blame onto his toadies. He personally signed an illegal check from his charity to pay for a campaign donation, but blamed it on an underling using the wrong check book. However after the Republicans went after Bill Clinton for sexual misconduct they left the door wide open to do the same against Trump.

Trump will be hard to nail because for all his talk, he does almost nothing. He has a history of only accepting his half of any quid pro quo, as his contractors can attest. Illegal activity is a form of activity, and activity is not in Trump's wheelhouse.

Attorney client privilege is important. However, if an attorney breaks the law and acts with a "client" they can't simply be permitted to claim "privilege" and it all remains a secret.

It seems to me that most people just agree with whichever "side" they identify with. I have no idea what has happened, what will happen or what should happen. I would support the law enforcement action if they have a solid basis for it. That said, raiding an attorney's office is not something that should be done lightly.

Still, attorney-client is very important. He is entitled to that.
There are specific exceptions to that privilege however. And under those exceptions neither he, nor anyone else, is entitled to that privilege.

According to the crime-fraud exception to the privilege, a client’s communication to her attorney isn’t privileged if she made it with the intention of committing or covering up a crime or fraud.

The crime-fraud exception applies if:

the client was in the process of committing or intended to commit a crime or fraudulent act,
or
the client communicated with the lawyer with intent to further the crime or fraud, or to cover it up.

What's funny about Trump complaining about this, is Trump pardoned former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpiao who once committed the same act without a court order and then defied a court order to return the files. The case dragged on for months with almost every criminal attorney in the area filing support for the lawyer.

In this case a federal judge must have agreed that there was probable cause that Trump's long time attorney was using attorney-client privilege to hide a crime.
