free guess: Don Bradman
Don Bradman is correct!

He is considered by some to be the most dominant sportsman of all time. For those who, like me, know little about cricket but know what a normal distribution looks like, I present Bradman’s dominance graphical form. The arrow points to Bradman:

Wow! That really is impressive batting.

I’m actually surprised I got that, I know very little about cricket even though my family is Indian. But I figured the subject must be an athlete and went from there.

Is this person famous for their work in industry? (I'm not sure whether 'Great Merchant' would include such people. If it would, as it does in Civilization 6, scratch my question.)
No.

I will decide if it overlaps completely with “Great Merchant” later but my gut is that business/industry as a whole is broader. I don’t think you all will run up against the question cap, though.

which in turn allows for - free guess: Sir Edmund Hillary
Wouldn't he be counted as famous for exploration? I'm not sure.
Wow, I completely missed that. Scratch my guess

We can deduce that this person was born before or in 1917 - the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991 and anyone born after that is not yet 35 years of age.
Whoops, made an embarrassing historical error - the USSR was founded in 1922!
