I had a feeling Spartaculous was right, but I had to guess the other obvious one since Chekhov was already taken. Good work.
The strategy of this game is interesting. I decided against Tolstoy simply because he is so well-known. I was choosing between Chekhov, Bulgakov, and Pasternak (Tolstoy was the "or 4").

Hooray! Is there a gun in your play?
Of course there is!

I have gone to math talks with "Chekhov's lemmas": if some result is stated in the first part of the talk, it will be used to prove something in the final part of the talk.

It is ANTON CHEKHOV! I am currently rehearsing a play called Stupid Fucking Bird, a modern adaptation of The Seagull.

Congratulations Spartaculous.

I think this will be over soon.
Yeah, I'm down to about 3 or 4 people that I think it could be, so I will go ahead and use my free guess on Anton Pavlovich Chekhov.

So we're looking for a male writer either born in Eastern Europe, or born in South America or Oceania (but had citizenship in Europe or North America).

Did he primarily or entirely write in Russian?

Primarily known for writing poetry, plays, and/or fiction?
Yes.
Born in 19th century (by which I mean a year starting with 18)
Yes.
Male?
Yes.
Was this person born in northern or western Europe?
No.
Born in an area that is currently within the Schengen area?

All good questions. I won’t be able to answer for a few hours. Sorry.

Born in an area that is currently within the Schengen area?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Area

(This will narrow it down somewhat regardless of the answer to Spartaculous's question.)

Was this person born in northern or western Europe?

Let's use the UN geoscheme here. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_geoscheme_for_Europe) As usual, since national boundaries may have shifted since this person was born, I am asking about how the location of the person's birth is classified today. Someone born in what was then Germany, but now Poland, should return a "No." answer.

OK, so probably a European born in Europe then, but not necessarily.

Primarily known for writing poetry, plays, and/or fiction?

Is this person known for involvement in music, film, or television?
No.
American or European?
Yes. The earlier question was where they were "born". That is not the same as what their nationality might be. Many Americans are born in other countries. This may be a case like that. Or it may simply be that they are European.

1. Real human, alive in 1900’s.
2, 5. Famous due to the arts (in a broad sense); but not music, film or TV.
3. Not born in Asia, Africa or North America.
4. Born before Dec 31 / 55.
6. American or European nationality.

Clarifying: holding my citizenship of North American or European country?
This doesn't clarify at all. First of all "my citizenship" is not clear at all, but more importantly, we were already told they are not from North America.

You appear to be asking a question that has already been partly answered.

Did you simply mean to ask if they are from Europe?
