10 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1902: England is wide open!!!
10 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1902: Yes!! Beware England, I have heard rumours that the Swiss Navy is planning on invading!
10 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1902: Oh England has nothing to worry about. The Ottoman Empire will be convoying over about 5 betallions of tanks to play cricket at Covington Garden.
10 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1902: Keep on with the keeping on!

I've got something on its way to sort you out.
11 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1902: The Kaiser brings important news to the world! Time Travelers from the Future have visited Germany and killed a young soldier by the name of Adolf Hitler. When the Kaiser was informed of this, one of the Time Travelers told us that he would end up damaging the world and leave a stain upon Germany that would never go away.

The Kaiser ordered us to to figure out what the young soldier's normal profession was, and we discovered that he was a painter. Under council, the Kaiser has decided that if a single painter can cause our nation great pain... that any painter must have the same ability.

The Kaiser has ordered that all painters be rounded up and confined for their and our protection, and we suggest all other nations follow suit.
11 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1902: This is rather sucky. Looks like I'm not long for this game.
12 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1902: Terribly sorry about that.
Russia is not very forgiving for a beginner.

France is probably the most forgiving country to start with as there are a lot of options to start out with.
12 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1902: Quixote, last time things started going south for you, you went into CD. If it happens again, it will be your last.
12 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: I'm not going into Civil Disorder (I'm not Quixote either). I was out most of yesterday and didn't get a chance to log on till now.
12 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: SG1 is Quixote.
12 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: Elias, you'ved logged on and gotten your moves done quickly. Did you think that message was directed at you?
12 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: Somewhat. I hadn't been on for almost a day, so I figured you might have been talking to me.
12 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: Nah brotha, your good with me. You havent missed a move and participate in press.
13 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: Fair enough. Oh, Turkey, why must you scorn me? Austria, why does your spite pierce my soul?

Anyone want to try and help get me out of this mess?
13 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: The English are always willing to help.
13 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: The forces of the Austrian Empire would like to point out that at no time have ANY of our forces invaded any of our Borther Nations. To the contrary, other that annexing Serbia and Greece (Both nations which we have strong historical claims on.) we have neither attacked nor taken territory from any nationa on our borders. This dispite losing territories to both Italy AND Russia. Yet, dispite these unprovoked attacks, we our armies remain within our historical borders. More than can be said of many.
13 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: There is evidence to suggest that the Austrian military, be it known to the Emperor or not, has aided in the brutal Turkish assault on the Russian protectorate of Rumania.
13 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: I would point out that the status of Rumania was in doubt from the starts And besides, at no time did Austrian troops ENETER Rumania, we merely supported what we saw as the Turks rightful claim on it. Our armies technically never left our borders.
13 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1903: The idea of rightful historical claims works rather well for the Italians. As such Russian territory, Berlin, Kiel, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Edinburgh are open for the taking, Everything else should be ceded to Rome.
13 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1903: Russian troops were forced from their stations in Rumania by a combined Austrian and Turkish assault, leaving them few options. They retreated to Galicia to avoid utter annihilation. They would have moved peacefully back to Ukraine had Austria not beset them while Turkey invaded Ukraine, cutting off further escape.
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: I'm more than a little bit ticked off at Steerman for dropping out like he did. Doing it that way screws the whole Diplomacy dynamic. :(
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: Agreed. This was his last time playing with us.

As for screwing up the dynamic, it actually didn't. Once you play enough games on php, you'll realize that the variances (like a germany in CD, or a green Russia) make for a unique game every time.

If both Dans will have it (Elias,Fedral) you both will be invited to the next one.
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: Sounds good to me. I had plenty of fun, though I must admit to being a tad disappointed that basically I got jumped by everyone, but hey, that's the point I guess. Anyway, I'd definitely be up for the next game.
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: Getting ganged up on is a kind of an initiation; the bigger fish smell blood on the water. Next game, you'll probably make sure something like that doesnt happen again. (thru diplomacy of course)
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: I have to agree with Karkand, it happens to all of us at one point or another and it is more likely to happen when you are new to the game. There are really two things that contribute to it. The fresh meat idea has already been discussed, the other part is the idea of the unknown. For all we know you could be an awesome player that just never found this website, if you are eliminated before you can find your bearings you are less of a threat
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: My theory is that you are playing a game with of bunch of dirty backstabbing SOBs. A pity you were assigned such naughty neighbors. Perhaps you will be luckier next game.
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: There is always that
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: Finalizing your opening moves without talking to anyone was a faux pas as well. Especially for a country with so many neighbors. Next time, even you know what your going to do already, send some friendly banter out so as not to spook your neighbors.
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: Unless your neighbor is Karkand, in which case threats are often the best option
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: Your always welcome at my dinner table. I have a special spot reserved just for you.

Red sauce or white sauce?
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: Right by the skin of your teeth....
15 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: I think it was two things that contributed to your early demise.
1 and what caused most of the malice directed towards you was the lack of a friendly hello. That really sets people up with this game because if you aren't talking to them chances are you are plotting with someone else to till you. Since you didn't talk to me at all and from the info I got from our mutual neighbors, you didn't talk to them much either.
2 was the early finalization of your moves. That cemented the idea that you were up to no good.

You did get better as the game progressed so I think the next game you play will be considerably longer. I look forward to the next game with you as well.
16 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: Some good reading.

http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/strategy.htm
16 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: uh oh, is Elias gonna CD as well?
16 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1904: Shit. No, same thing as before. Sometimes stuff comes up and I don't get to the computer for a while. Anyway, looks like I'm toast unless divine intervention comes into play.
16 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1904: As for not talking, Turkey was the only bordering I didn't talk to at all (didn't really get around to it). Was supposedly on good terms with Germany and Austria, but that went south.

The early finalization was really just a mistake. I didn't know what I was doing or how the interface worked exactly, nor the implications of it. I figured it out over time, but it was a little too late once I bounced at Sweden and Rumania.
16 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1904: As Chris said:
"It something of a hasing that most players go through"
The hasing period is done and like I said it looks like you got the basics down with this game. It won't set you back at all points wise as you will be reset to 100 points this fall or a little after.
19 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1905: Well, its off to the hospital for Heather & I.

Looks like I'll have to let someone else win the tournament tommorow.

For shame!
19 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1905: Congrats!
19 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1905: Let us know how it all goes. You arn't going to get any sleep for the next 24 hours or so. Do your best to take cat naps.
19 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1905: Thanks, hopefully everything will go allright.
19 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1905: Heh, I'm on like 5:30hours right now, another 24hrs is going to be rough. Still, I'm glad I'm a man. I plan on just sitting in the lounge and watching infomercials all night.

Can I interest anyone in an AB rocker?
19 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1905: LOLZ. I spent the entire time with Heather. It was odd but she really appreciated the support.

Again, Best of luck and a big congrats. Keep us posted tomorrow!
19 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1905: SUPER!! I'll say a prayer for both of you. Let us know what's happening.
19 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1905: Thanks for the well wishes, its much appreciated. Looks like a false alarm....its about 5:00 ish and the hospital sent us home..so I *will* be there tommorow to represent.
21 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1906: Damn, are we about to have 3 missed moves?
24 Jul 08 UTC Autumn, 1907: The English Empire invite the rest of occupied Europe to marvel at its new dreadnought class battleships.
24 Jul 08 UTC Spring, 1908: For the record, Im prepared to give the win to whomever stabs the other first.
30 Jul 08 UTC John, make your final move!!!
30 Jul 08 UTC Congrats Ambrose!
Hope we can start the next game soon.
