24 Oct 10 UTC Autumn, 1904: Hold on a minute. If there is an Eastern Triple and a Western Triple, where does that leave me? Oh wait....

27 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: Good game everybody!
28 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: Good game, England!

Austria, Russia, are we ready to draw?
28 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: Draw set.
Good game to all.
28 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: Oh, come on! The win is right there for ya, Russia.
28 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: ^ agreed. I'd like to know why you didn't go for the solo Russia. Just curious.
28 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: Me too, especially that I offered to help :)
28 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: I also wondered, though I probably should hold off on questioning you until that draw is finalized. I think there's a good chance Austria and I could have stalemated you, but I think there was an equally good chance you could have gotten the solo.

Whatever the case, congratulations to both Russia and Austria on a well-played game. Good game, everyone.
28 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: There is not stalemate line there, and Russia is in a much better position.
29 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: England, do you mean now, or a few turns ago? It's very possible Russia could have pushed for the win right after Austria's NMR without our being able to hold a stalemate. But Russia graciously decided to adhere to his early-game promise rather than pursue the win. And I do believe that, properly executed, Austria and I hold a stalemate position.

My point is merely to say that Russia clearly played a phenomenal game, and one perhaps deserving of a solo win. But I credit him for his integrity and sportsmanship -- he showed a level of discipline I'm not sure I'd be able to muster in his situation.
29 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: Early game promise? Level of discipline to stick to a predetermined three-way draw?

What exactly do you mean by that, France? How long has a 3-way-draw been in the works?
29 Nov 10 UTC Spring, 1912: Ah, perhaps I misspoke. I'm talking more about broad alliances that were negotiated in the wake of the collapse of the western triple. Russia and Austria clearly had a strong alliance, and I tried to position myself as the third leg of that triangle, so that neither could stab for the win. When Austria NMRed (because of a failure to pause the game) and Russia had what I regarded as a strong chance for the solo, he chose not to take advantage of Austria's weakened position.

It could have been out of a sense of loyalty toward his ally Austria, or a sense of fairness, not wanting to take advantage of an NMR outside of Austria's control. Or, it could have been the fact that despite his advantages, a well-coordinated E/F/G/A alliance could stop him from taking the solo, and force him into a 5-way draw rather than a 3-way. You'd probably have to ask him.

But to directly answer your question, Italy, I've only been working with Russia since the beginning of 1910. Up to that point, you'll find that my orders were decidedly anti-Russian, I think.

Anyhow, I imagine all of this would be better suited for after the conclusion of the game. Perhaps we can discuss this more then, Italy?
29 Nov 10 UTC Sorry for the NMR... turkey day threw off my schedule. GG had by all. Russia had the upper hand a good part of the game, but everytime I pushed back in paranoia, he did something to she he wasn't going to attack. He had me to the end, but I made sure I'd be able to strike quickly if he had stabbed... I can't say I'd guarantee a stop at his solo attempt, but I knew when he had opportunity and would have made it difficult at least. Surprised he kept to his word the whole game. It is highly unusual on this site. Only other player I know that sticks to his word is ivo...
29 Nov 10 UTC Ahh, just saw that this ended. Good game all. I'd like to hear from Russia but he probably won't check back on here. The other commentary has been insightful. Hopefully we all meet again.
29 Nov 10 UTC Okay here it goes.
The game begins with the usual promises of bounces in Galacia and Black between my closest neighbours. On top of that Turkey decides to open to Armenia so I choose to stick with Austria for the time being.Germany allows me into Sweden so I think if there is a western triple it will fall apart since England won't like this action or Germany will build fleet in Kiel or berlin and just take sweden following year.
Italy goes for Germany so I ask both Italy and Austria to help with Turkey and the Eastern triple was born.We soon have Turkey on the ropes.Despite Austrian paranoia of moving to Galcia to help against Turkey.
With Turkey contained Austria and I head west along with Italy.France goes for Italy at the same time and England and Germany head north at me.Thank god is was only with fleets since Austria would be less likely to help them if he stabbed at me.
As we headed west Austria decides to stab Italy no big deal to me as France and Germany had pulled out of the north so I only really had England to deal with. And Italy told me to take his holdings in Turkey sweet I was growing and Austria really didn't bother to bitch about the way the SCs where split. So I kept working with him to take out Germany our next target.
This is where France came into the new triple draw in 06. With France attacking England and England attacking Germany.Austria and I where going to come out ahead as the west was broken.Austria giving some Italain SCs to France kept him tied to us as word with Germany and England would be not trusted. So we had our triple. That would keep us all honest. As we made inroads into Germany Austria back tracked in 08 and I said to myself here we go so I moved all my forces in the south to attack postion.I guess Austria realized that if he moved any further east he would be fighting a losing battle so he backed off and I left my forces there till he had moved first.
It was at that point that I thought solo but Germany/England still had enough forces in play to force a 5 way if France/Austria asked them.So once again we worked at finishing Germany. In 09 as I was set to land in England.France decide I was trying for solo and cock blocked me in Edi.
I told Austria and France both that the game was going to end in a three way and that I didn't care if it was England/Germany/France/Austria involved I was going to be there.
I don't know what they said to each other but France soon got back in line or risk losing his postion which was the best he could hope for.Austria always had a spot since with out us working together we would not have been in postion to control the game. But if he sided with France I was prepared to work with what was left of England/Germany.
Anyways I ramble. Why no solo attempt-like to reward thoose that helped me to the postion that I enjoyed. Also could have ended in messy 5 way.I don't mind drawing but the fewer the better.
As for thoose that offered help in my solo attempt I think it was there last chance to survive and could not really trust them to carry through so I past on it.
Any ways good game to all and hope to see you all in future battles.
