12 Jun 14 UTC | End-of-game statement: Congratulations to Ukraine for a well-played game, and I would like to thank everyone for playing! First of all, I really want to apologize to the player of Egypt--to be honest, I really feel bad about stabbing you since you helped me into Tunisia and Italy. It was a very tough choice because after I took southern Italy, the only two people who I could attack (France and Egypt) had both been helpful so far. In hindsight it probably would have been a good idea to de-escalate in North Africa like Egypt had suggested, but I did not see Egypt's message calling for a cease-fire until after the build phase of 1999 was over, when I had built an army in Morocco. Also, I was reluctant to stab France, who had respected all of our mutual agreements so far, especially without an immediate commitment from Poland. For this reason, I must share some of the blame for causing Egypt to go AFK, which significantly influenced the outcome of the game. I also regret that I did not inform Poland of the possibility of a Ukrainian stab. After Ukraine had made it clear that he was not interested in going after Egypt, it should have been a red flag that Poland would be the next target, but somehow I failed to inform Poland of this because it seemed so remote from my territory. On a positive note, I am glad that my relationship with France ended up working so well--I had expected to stab him earlier, but as the Ukrainian menace grew I realized that it would not be a wise decision to do so. Also, this is random, but for the last turn I made a chart to compare my four possible defenses in Egypt with the four possible Ukrainian attacks, and I picked one that would hold against 75% of Ukrainian attacks. Of course, Ukraine managed to guess the right attack :P |
12 Jun 14 UTC | (Also, I am a bit disappointed that Russia did not cooperate with taking Sweden--it would have held off a Ukrainian victory by one turn. But then again it wouldn't have affected the outcome...) |
12 Jun 14 UTC | gg. And we almost held the Ukrainian empire off to! |
12 Jun 14 UTC | Well in fairness I cannot really take credit for the winning attack - I received significant advice that tipped the scale; thanks very much to that person :). I will also note that I was very hesitant to move against Poland initially, since he was both a good ally and a strong opponent, but ultimately it became an obvious campaign to wage. I also feel bad for stabs against Russia and Italy, who were reliable allies that I failed to save (although I think it would have been difficult to help them much more than I did). Finally, I would like to add that Spain and France were very good at halting (and in the case of Venice, reversing) my advances, and I will be more careful when playing with either of them in the future XD |
